@MsMini: WHY would mom refuse antibiotics. Eek!
Actually,it's really good to hear your horror stories about women who refuse treatments and get sick because it helps me trust the hospital more. :)

Being GBS positive really isn't such a big deal, as long as the mom receives antibiotics during labour. If for some reason she doesn't receive antibiotics during labour (labour is too quick, etc) the baby will be admitted to NICU for 2-5 days of IV anti-biotics.

In 5 years working in NICU I have only seen 1 baby get sick from GBS, and it was a prolonged labour, mom refused antibiotics, and baby got pneumonia, and was perfectly fine after 1 day on a ventilator, and 5 days of IV anti-biotics,.

It's actually relatively common to be a GBS carrier. You just have to be on antibiotics (usually given by IV) during labor and delivery to prevent infecting the baby.

ETA: in my case, there was no additional special monitoring of the baby. As long as you receive enough antibiotics during birth, it's really not something to be overly worried about.

@skibobrown: that's what the doctors and websites tell her, but there's still risk to her baby, and the baby has to be monitored after. If baby develops anything from it, it may appear within a few days, or it could be a few weeks. She's most concerned with the possibility of death to her baby.

Oh gosh. Good. I also thought you meant Gullain Barre syndrome, which would probably be pretty terrible to have during pregnancy. I think with the group B strep you just need to take antibiotics throughout the birth. I could be wrong though...

Did she not have it before>? Never heard of Guillan Barre being related to pregnancy. Or is it a different GBS?

My best friend is due in two weeks, and her doctor just recently tested her for GBS and she found out she has it. Has anyone else experienced this? She's a little worried because of the risk factors involved, but seems to be taking it well, I'll admit, when she texted me to tell me, I googled it before calling her to see how she was doing!

ETA- Group B Streptococcus
