@Mrs. Goose: @Shantuck: Thank you both for the recommendations! I was thinking/wondering the same thing about starting probiotics early and if the benefits would be wiped out... I will probably get some now and just start them anyway to get my system used to them a bit and have them on-hand since this baby could come any day now!

As I understand it, the antibiotics kill off all of the good bacteria so I would think starting now probably wouldn’t do much. I would definitely take some after birth, though. I was was gbs+ and I gave my baby probiotic drops but didn’t take anything myself and ended up with thrush about 8 weeks later (though my baby didn’t have it fortunately).

ETA: I used a women’s formula from Whole Foods in the refrigerated section to help clear up the thrush.

@lindseykaye: It's pricey, but a highly recommended baby brand. I gave it to both my kids as babies for the first 3 months. Hopefully there are minimal or no adverse antibiotic reactions for you.

@KNS: I definitely wasn't advising doing it, just sharing what someone in a similar situation did. It is a scary thing to think about because it can be so serious. Sorry your baby got sick. I was really worried about my baby at the beginning because I didn't get the full dose. The midwives here (or at my clinic) ask you if you want to as part of your birth plan and it never crossed my mind that people wouldn't get the antibiotics. Apparently in some other countries they don't even do a GBS test during pregnancy or it is not routinely offered anyway, which I found interesting.

@lindseykaye: I'll have to ask my mom what brand, but she gets her refrigerated ones at Mama Jeans. Health food store would be a good start for recommendations.

@KNS: I’m glad everything turned out alright but I’m sure it was really hard. Seems like a good idea to keep the probiotics going in general.

Anyone have a brand they like for themselves? I’d love to just get them delivered prime but I’m guessing a refrigerated/live is better?

@lindseykaye: Just FYI - at 16 months my baby is still incredibly susceptible to bad thrush diaper rashes. We haven't been good about continuing the probiotic so that may be part of the issue, but she also got way more antibiotics with a week of IV antibiotics rather than just those from labor.

@Mrs. Cereal: I'm planning on a birth center delivery and my midwives said I could come even in early labor just to get the antibiotics and then go back home if needed (or am welcome to stay, my call) so I will hopefully get them in time! My last labor was about 12 hoursand I spent 5 at the hospital before delivery so with a possible shorter second time labor I’ll try to go for the meds and not wait as long to go in.

@KNS: @Mrs. Goose: thanks for the tip on the newborn brand! I’m glad to know there’s something for them I can start right away. I know the antibiotics could make her more susceptible to thrush so that would be good to possibly avoid. And I am definitely getting the antibiotics even with it being a complicated situation for me. We have a good game plan for possible reactions to them (creams, meds, etc) and I am prepared to taken on the risk of reactions or side effects if it reduces the risk of infection for the baby.

Please don't refuse the antibiotics as pp's friend did - I had GBS, got the full dose and my baby ended up with a late onset GBS infection 2.5 weeks later.

It is rare but happens in about 1 in 5,000 and the rate of infection has apparently stayed the same regardless of treatment. Needless to say, the baby was in the hospital for a week getting IV antibiotics to treat and having to watch such a young baby be sick and get the full septic workup in ER is awful. We did biogaia probiotics for baby as well after this episode as our ped recommended them as one that had been studied to be effective.

I was gbs+ for my second baby and I always take probiotics so just continued to, but mine are junky and cheap so I’d recommend getting something quality because of your particular situation. I know people with penicillin allergies and other antibiotic allergies and it can do a number on your system to have to take antibiotics so start the probiotics now. They’re good for your digestion too! My friend who is one of the people I mentioned above (and sounds a lot like you) decided not to get antibiotics because she is allergic to penicillin and one of the alternates and the one they recommended was apparently very strong and they said it would likely be really hard on her body.

I gave my baby the biogaia probiotic drops.

I would absolutely start probiotics now and try to get your body prepped for the antibiotics.

I used a drop probiotic for my son after birth because of my GBS issues. He didn't seem to have any lasting affects.

The only thing that was bad for us was that I got to the hospital only 2 hours prior to delivering him, so neither of us got a full round of antibiotics and we had to stay for an extra day for monitoring. So be sure to get to the hospital early enough to get a full round in.

I am Group B Strep positive with my second baby and am prepping for a vaginal delivery soon (39+1 today). I know that I will have antibiotics administered during labor for a while (Clindamycin most likely for me as I have a penicillin allergy). Because of my antibiotics allergies (there are multiple) I almost never take antibiotics at all. Probably once in the last 10 years or so.

Is it a good idea to start taking probiotics right now in preparation? Should I take them afterward? What about my newborn? Anyone have advice on what is a good approach to prep for the potential stress on me/the baby from this? Favorite product recommendations are welcome as well :)

Thanks!
