They told me to make sure I went to the hospital ASAP if my water broke so they could get me started on antibiotics. It's really common. They did a hep lock for me at the birth center. I had two doses of antibiotics, and then they disconnected the IV when I wasn't getting the doses. It was not a big deal for me at all, I still had a med-free delivery. The basic premise is go in to the hospital as soon as your water breaks (if your contractions aren't already close enough to have sent you there). They stick in the IV and get the antibiotics flowing. It is very common and you will recieve antibiotics in an IV during labor and delivery.
