@QBbride: It was diet controlled. I was on metformin, too. My numbers were impeccable. I was heartbroken when she said they were going to induce anyway (I was painfully strict with my diet because I wanted to avoid induction) but it sounds as though they had picked things up on the scans and NSTs that they just decided not to mention. It was clearly the right decision.

Were you on insulin for your GD or was it diet controlled? I think insulin can age the placenta faster.

I don't think women with GD need to ALL be induced at 38 weeks. It depends on how your placenta is functioning. NSTs can help determine that, and that way maybe you don't need to be induced if it's working well and baby is growing normally?

(I'm in no means disagreeing with what happened last time - sounds like E was small and it was a good decision to get her out!)

@MrsLilybugg: Yeah, but I was 10lb heavier than pre pregnancy weight 2yrs later when I fell pregnant with #2. I really should have kept up with the healthy eating after the GD went away!

@Cherrybee: thank you so much!! I'll definitely wall you. I have my test scheduled for first week in January - that's amazing that you were only 4 lbs over pre-preg after having the baby!!!

@MrsLilybugg: I started my GD diet at 30 weeks last time. I had gained 10lb in the first trimester and I cant remember how much in the second.... but the day after I had my baby I stepped on the scales and I was only 4lb over my pre-pregnancy weight! If you are diagnosed with it and need any help with the diet, just shout up. Id be happy to help.

@MrsLilybugg: Yes, but the big thing is that I felt better once I was on the diet and my glucose was regulated. Plus I learned to like a lot of new foods. I need to get back to that, my sweet tooth is out of control now. Good luck! I hope you pass your 3-hour!

@avivoca: I know this is an old post, but... when did you start the GD diet? I am about 27 weeks and have a feeling I have GD. I failed the one-hour glucose and am scheduled for the 3-hour one. Baby has been consistently measuring ahead by 1-2 weeks and I read that GD babies are often large. I'm curious about the "losing 10 lbs when you started it" and wonder if that's possible for me this late in the game!

I've never heard of this!

My first son was born 5 lb 5 oz and 17.5 inches at 38 weeks - went into labor naturally but had been on bed rest for preterm labor.

My second son was monitored for size throughout the whole third trimester - weekly ultrasounds. At 38w it was determined he hadn't grown since 36w so I was induced....he was 5 lb 6 oz and 19 inches.

I think I just have gestational small babies (my mom had small babies, my MIL had small babies), but I think it's better safe than sorry if it's determined the baby is not thriving.

@Cherrybee: I had to learn to love sweet potatoes, eggs, etc. What helped me was paying attention to portion sizes. I was able to eat cereal for breakfast by measuring everything and having a half-serving of milk, I ate lots of fruit, eggs, and my lunches were basically salads with avocado to help me feel full. I lost 10 lbs. in a month when I started the diet.

@Cherrybee: It really is! One thing that helped me was being extremely familiar with diabetes. My husband is Type 1, so I had a lot more knowledge about what I needed to do/what I could eat or not eat than the average person.

That is really interesting to hear. Most of the time you hear about providers pushing to induce with GD because of the fear of a large baby. My GD was also impeccably controlled through diet, but I was not induced and my 40-weeker was 7 lbs. 10.5 oz. when she was born. The placenta also appeared to be fully functioning and intact when I delivered. It's something I'll talk with my midwife about next time.

I was induced at 39 weeks and DD came out 6 lbs 4 oz. The dr that delivered me said that I shouldn't have been induced either. Since I plan on trying a new OB next time anyway, I'm gonna ask about this for sure.

@tinyperson: It might pay to mention it at your next appointment..... My OB is doing lots of extra monitoring (+ the asprin) and, in my experience, its unlike the NHS to spend money unless there's a genuine reason to. I'm sure your OB has it all under control though - it might be because we have so little monitoring here unless something crops up.

My pediatrician said in her experience GD babies have been smaller than non GD babies. In my case it was true - DS1 was 10 1/2 pounds while DS2 was 7lbs 3 oz. My GD baby also came earlier because of low fluid - the placenta already seemed to be failing. I never thought about it being GD related.

Yes! I've heard of this. My first was IUGR that was diagnosed late in the pregnancy. In my case they didn't know the reason but I did a ton of reading and that is definitely one of the possible reasons.

@Cherrybee: I had GD with my first and had a c section at 38 + 5 because she was breech. It was estimated at my last scan that she would be 7.5 lbs, but was actually only 5 lbs 8 oz. I've only met with my OB once so far this pregnancy, but nothing's been mentioned re size for this one...

No complications or issues related to her size though.

I saw my consultant obstetrician for the first time yesterday. I was referred (from midwife care) because I have GD again and also because my last baby was "small for dates" at 5lb 15oz, 39 weeks.

I have spent the last 2.5 yrs fully believing that E was induced far too early - my GD was impeccably controlled. But my new OB accessed my records today and told me that the decision was made to induce me because the baby wasn't growing. With GD, she told me, the placenta sometimes packs up. For some reason, my previous OB didn't tell me, she simply said it was protocol to induce at 38 weeks (and she said that via one of her team - she never actually came into the room herself).

My new OB has prescribed asprin to help the placenta work better and extra growth scans. I will definitely be induced by 38 weeks. My OB said that this would be the preferred option anyway, with my history of rapid birth.

Does anyone have much experience of this? I'm kinda scared - but also super humbled. I've spent all this time blaming my OB for E's weight, when actually she might have saved her life. Whoever heard of GD causing tiny babies as well as large ones?
