I remember I was always able to have 1 slice of wheat bread with peanut butter. It took some trial and error to find out what spikes my sugar and what doesn't. Other than that, just as much protein as possible! Eggs, avocado, cheese.

@MamaBear87: I was pretty surprised that they let me walk around. My doc mentioned that if 2 out of the 4 blood draws failed, then I failed the whole thing. My 1-hour number was the one I failed again. Fasting, 2- and 3-hour I passed no problem.

@2PeasinaPod: interesting that they let you walk and passed you with one failed number. Usually anything over fails you and you aren't supposed to walk during as it lowers your numbers. Sounds like you had yourself covered by eating well though. My little had zero issues also

With my second pregnancy, I started off on a better footing by eating better. When I went for my initial 1-hour test, I failed, and they sent me for a 3-hour. After each blood draw, I walked the halls of the hospital, and I failed 1 out of the 4 blood draws, so they passed me. I continued to eat a GD diet, but I was thankful not to have to stick myself 4 times/day.

Ultimately, it was genetic for me. Both of my boys came out 6lbs, 13oz, and their blood sugar checked out fine. My blood sugar immediately returned to normal once I went for my pp review.

@autumnlove: doesn't really matter i was just curious. Water and walking were huge helps for me as well.
I would go meat and egg protein heavy with a smaller carb serving at breakfast if that's the meal she's having trouble with

I had GD with my oldest, and I would do a whole wheat english muffin with chunky peanut butter on top. The key is to balance any carb with protein.

@tinyperson: ooh that is a good idea. I will let my friend know! I think the foods (oatmeal with fruit, toast with nut butters) that worked for her in her first and second tris are causing spikes now. I think she is around 28-29 weeks along?

@Shantuck: The goal is reduced carbs (sugar is one component). When I had GD, I was given a net carb goal for each meal/snack.

It's also less about "permission" than it is about how your body processes different types of carbs. In my case, bread (even sprouted wheat), pasta and rice spiked my glucose numbers, but I could tolerate fruit and dairy carbs, even first thing in the morning. So I was doing plain, whole milk greek yogurt with strawberries every morning. Lattes made good snacks for me. I did eat a lot of eggs and sausage/bacon for breakfast.

@autumnlove: What about a frittata with veggies and cheese? I've been eating those for breakfast myself lately!

Is the goal to have little to no sugar? I've never had GD but I eat almond butter (just almonds and salt are in the ingredient list) on Ezekial's sprouted grain toast all the time. I also make avocado toast (avocado, lemon juice, a little salt, and crushed red pepper) on Ezekial's sprouted grain bread. The sprouted grain bread has a low glycemic index so I'm assuming that would be permitted.

I can't eat eggs. Which is the worst with gd

I ate 2 breakfast sausage, a slice of cheese and a piece of low carb toast. I also had to wait until after my morning numbers to have my one cup of coffee.

I also drank 32 Oz of water with breakfast and at least 16 after every other meal. That helped alot.

Breakfast is by far the worst to try and figure out for gd. I just ate the same thing every day. It sucked but got me good numbers
