@junebugsmama: sorry, we did not! I ended up going back to Pampers to get his skin back to normal and then potty trained very soon after (he just happened to be ready, thankfully). I ordered the starter pack for my infant though and really like the look and feel and quality but can't attest to the absorbency etc on a big kid!

@lamariniere: Darn that's not a good sign. I know with the velcro they are adjustable but maybe not that adjustable! Thanks for responding!

@charlotte: Did you end up trying G diapers for your son? I am thinking about getting some for my big 18m old. We used to cloth diaper but he outgrew all his one size all in ones, and the random selection of flats and prefolds with the few covers we have that still work aren't impressing me. Mainly cause I don't like the plastic part touching his skin too much.

@lamariniere: Do you happen to know what disposable size your son fit into when he was wearing XL g diapers? My son is fully in size 6, but some of the trimmer disposable diapers tend to rub on his hips and get him a little bit heat rashy. Doesnt seem to bother him, just me... but if I am potentially gonna be trying new types of disposable diapers I was thinking of investing in some cloth or hybrid ones!

I don't know anything about the wheat/hypo-allergenic aspect but I tried out g diaps and I didn't like them. The snaps that snap in the plastic liner part would leave red marks on my baby's skin and then they started leaking. I really wanted to love them because I liked how I could reuse the covers and how they were much "trimer" looking but I finally gave up on even using them as a back up diaper and put them away.

I only used the cloth inserts, but a friend was using the disposable ones and gave me a couple and I was kind of shocked at how huge it was! Like bigger than a regular disposable diaper. I guess they are biodegradable so it doesn't matter they're bigger but I just wasn't interested in them (and I had the option for cloth so stuck to that). Anyway, just my two cents before you invest in them.

Both of my LOs have been very sensitive to pampers on the rare occasion we used them (like at daycare).

We used gDiapers with disposable inserts on my son until he was potty trained at 2.5. He was a big boy and in size XL. I found them to be absorbent enough, occasionally we would have nighttime leaks, but they were usually fine. I mostly used g's on my younger LO, but she started daycare earlier than my son, so she was in disposables more and we switched to all disposables about a month ago (just after age 2). I buy a brand called Naty by Nature baby care and they seem to be very gentle. She gets the occasional rash if she has been in a diaper for too long, but otherwise I'm happy with them.

@MrsSRS: that is a good idea, will see how that works

@ShootingStar: I need to prioritize his skin / allergies / comfort right now so I will go back to pampers if needed but I was just hoping there were other good solutions that are a little "cleaner".... part of me says millions of babies have used pampers for years and part of me can't ignore the stories I keep seeing about how we need to avoid phthalates and fragrance. But almost all of the natural diapers have wheat. :bummed: this is also research for my younger. I like for her to avoid all of his allergens and she still has years of diapers left!

But if it turns out to be a few more months of pampers, it's not the end of the world. Extra potty training motivation?

If pampers didn't irritate his skin, I don't understand why you wouldn't go back to them? It seems a waste to buy an untried solution, especially since it won't be cheap and he's already 2.5.

@charlotte: I might try the disposable inserts with my next kid. The cloth ones couldn't hold up to my heavy wetter.

Up and Up diapers fit like Pampers but have no fragrance, if you decide you want disposables.

@avivoca: thanks! good to hear! I just ordered the starter for my 5 month old since I know she has plenty of diaper time left...if it seems good for her I may try the larger for big brother... i've always been all disposable all the way for the convenience but DS's allergies have me really thinking about all the chemicals. poor guy.

summary of my son's diaper life:
age 0 - 2.5 yrs, pampers....everything was great
2.5ish, I switched to honest to be "safer"

he has developed HORRIBLE eczema in his whole diaper / leg area and I suspect it is from the diapers. he has a wheat allergy and I just realized there is wheat in there. worst mom ever.

that said, I don't REALLLLLY want to go back to pampers because I don't love that there is fragrance in there...but I could...

he's working on "toilet learning" but not close to being done with diapers yet..

for the next few months would it be a waste to try gDiapers? I like the ingredients in the disposable part...earth-wise + allergy-wise.

do they work on big kids / heavy wetters?

Thank you !
