@sunny: close to day 1, we'll be in the hospital for two and then our first doctor's appointment is day 4 or 5. The Boba 4G has an infant insert that starts at 7 lbs. Besides that I can borrow a wrap from the babywearing group that may be more comfortable and a better fit for brand new babies.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Do you plan on babywearing from day 1? I think some of the carriers have a minimum recommended weight of 7 or 8 pounds.

@misolee: I don't buy into nipple confusion either. I saw my mom give my bro the breast and the bottle. The boy just wanted to eat. Lol

The SSC was already on my buy now list b/c we're skipping a from birth stroller, I just listed a few things I was on the fence about. We're back to getting the Boba 4G. My doula aka babywearing guru prefers the Boba over the Lillebaby- I narrowed down my picks to those two.

My LC had me pumping from day 1 to establish supply. Not quite sure why you have to wait six weeks. I had a great supply and bf relationship for my LO. (Maybe she doesn't want you using a bottle? For fear of nipple confusion? Which I don't buy). Anyways, even if that's a real thing, I would still pump and freeze it to use later.

Also, stroller was a must. If you don't want to buy a nice one right away, I would get the snap and go. We had A travel system and used it often in the beginning.

I would also suggest some sort of baby wearing device. Used my Ergo a lot in the beginning too.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We actually had good luck with transferring DS into the Ergo from the car seat (asleep) - it was a big production of keeping the car/radio running, swiftly move him into the carrier while bouncing and holding him tightly, then turn off engine and close car door for success. :silly: Despite my comment about the gluxe visor, i think it probably has the biggest shade out of all the umbrellla strollers out there!

@Freckles: we plan to break the cardinal rule of don't wake a sleeping baby and jostle him into a SCC. Even if we buy a different stroller (and that's good to know about the G-luxe visor) we still are not using going to use an infant seat. Either way baby will have to relocate.

@avivoca: @Ms.Badger: we skipped the infant car seat and bought a convertible one with an infant insert, so no chance to cart baby around outside of a car. My back up can-use-from-birth stroller is an Armadillo, available for 2 day Prime shipping. My back up to the back up is a B-Agile that's in store at my local Target.

@Greentea: I'm convinced not to delay the pump. The LC I mentioned has an entire class on pumping to help moms find the perfect pump for them. Whatever insurance gives me is what I'm using. It's an Ameda. The LC is very optimistic about BF.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I love my G-luxe but one thing to note - i don't find that the extended sun visor does a great job of protecting small babies from the sun unless the sun is directly overhead. I found the sunshade most useful around 8-9 months when they were taller, and just draped a muslin blanket over the top to provide more protection.

Since you do a lot of driving, i'm curious as to what you will do if your baby falls asleep in the convertible carseat and you need to get somewhere? Don't worry, i'm not trying to argue against the convertible car seat since i know you did your research! :)

I actually used the terry cloth type bibs for drool, and didn't like using them for food (they stained). So i would probably make sure i have a bunch of bibs just in case. My kids are the worst droolers and i needed so many. :(

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Are you doing an infant carseat? If so, I definitely recommend getting the snap-and-go or whichever version is specific to your seat (I have the Graco one because my seat just clicks right in). I loved having the stroller option in the store or out on a walk when we didn't want to babywear.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: other posters have already said it, but just to reiterate: you 100% need a pump. I never thought I would need one and ended up having to use one, luckily the insurance covered it and they had the covered models AT the hospital. I am surprised a LC told you that information. If you want to BF, get a pump ready, because in the event you are unable, pumping will actually up your bm output to establish supply, and allow LO to get bm.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Having a few (3-6) is probably good. My kid wasn't a drooler but we were given tons of little useless ones. Once we did BLW we used two big a&a ones, two plastic bibs, and assorted others. I wished I had all A&A ones from the beginning.

If your kid is a spitter or a drooler you might want the little ones because the big ones kinda overwhelm little guys. But you won't know if your kid will need them till later.

@Foodnerd81: oh yeah, especially if we hold off on the G-luxe purchase until closer to 3 months. The other two lightweight strollers I like can accommodate babies from birth on and *still* be our only stroller.

@brownepiano: I have a few bib sets picked out- one for the drooling stage and one of those smock types for BLW. I figured for now I'd just go with the terrycloth ones that are touted as an infant bib? Bibs are easy to store, but does that count as a can wait solid food thing?

Amazon Prime over here too! @snowjewelz: @yoursilverlining: Amazon is my first retailer ready to go with the completion discount, so once I pull the trigger OMG the house will be a baby store. That's the second hesitation...Baby stuff everywhere. We haven't cleaned out the room where the baby stuff will go. DH is still lamenting the loss of his room or maybe he really thinks we're relocating my office. IDK

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks for telling me about all of this. I also take the car everywhere, but I do enjoy walking around my neighborhood and plan to do that with the baby when I'm on maternity leave. I'm hung up on the stroller decision because of my thoughts about baby #2 which will come quickly, if at all. I hate to spend $500ish on cruz when I could spend $800ish on vista to accommodate a second baby. But I really hate to spend all of that in general. The gluxe might be a great choice! I really like the simple one handed recline feature of the gluxe.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: From your list is most necessary thing to get would be some kind of pump. Even if nursing is going great, you may need the pump. My LO couldn't latch when I was really engorged so I had to pump until I was softer. My hand pump was great for this but it wasn't an option not to have anything.

If you are definitely going to get a bouncer and playmat, have them from day 1 or you will just get less use out of it (these have a short enough life already). I had my babies in bouncer and on the playmat within the first week.

I personally used my stroller most in the first 12 weeks when I was on mat leave because he would nap so well in it and it meant I got a walk instead of being stuck inside the house. My LO runs HOT and hated the carrier in the early days (now he likes it just fine.) If you are committed to not getting a stroller that works with your infant seat, then you probably don't need that until you feel comfortable putting your LO in the stroller (for my early sitter, it was about 5 months old)

@agold: it is an umbrella stroller! A well padded one, but definitely an umbrella stroller. What was important to me was an all wheel suspension, extended sun visor, and a decent size basket. The only con for me is that it doesn't have a peekaboo window, you have to lift up the back fabric to see baby. Depending on what else you may want in a stroller like travel system optional- it may not be a good pick.

We take our car everywhere so we didn't need some of the creature comforts of a full-size/ from birth stroller. I figure in the first three months there really aren't that many places I will travel with baby that a stroller would be 100% necessary. Now, if my LO hates being strapped to my chest we'll both hate erands for the first few months.

You can never have too many burp cloths. Seriously.

I started using my pump at 2 weeks, per my lactation consultant, plus, many people have issues requiring a pump, so I would at least have that ready to go, just in case.

We also used the swing from the beginning, though a bouncy chair would serve a similar purpose.

You didn't mention it, but I would say a diaper changing station is essential in the beginning. Doesn't need to be an actual changing table but somewhere that you can have a pad, a couple changes of covers, diapers, and wipes all there together.

We got a lot of use out of a stroller that our car seat could click into in the first months.

I also highly recommend a baby carrier. We used ours (Lillebaby) on a daily basis from about 3 weeks on. BUT, we originally had a different carrier but decided we didn't like it once baby was actually here, so you may want to wait until baby is here to get this.

I know it's been mentioned already, but i would definitely get bottles and pump now. I was really annoyed that i listened to friends who told me not to bother with bottles or pumps for the same reason you gave (as per the LC). I had to take DD back to the hospital a few days later because of jaundice, and ended up asking my sister to have a pump and bottles ready before we came home.

We used our swing and a high chair from the day we came home. Our high chair is one you can use from infants-2 years old, it reclines to three different positions. So we used the high chair or swing when I was making breakfast or when we were eating dinner so baby could be with us while we ate.

I used the pump when my milk came in, just to relieve some engorgement and build up a little stash while I had a lot of milk. Now at 3 months pp it's hard to pump anything, but breastfeeding is still totally fine (I'm just making what she needs and she can get it out quickly and easily). I also only pumped for a week or two to build up a supply and then stopped and also never used that milk because I just didn't need it.

The other thing I used was a baby wrap carrier quite a bit. It allowed me to eat with family at dinners because she would just sleep in it for an hour or two. I used it if I needed to do dishes too.

Things that can wait for at least a month in my opinion: play mat, bottle warmer, bottles.

Depends if you can make decisions fast, aka when it suddenly comes time that you need that item asap. And also if you can get something quickly (stores close by, Amazon Prime, etc).

I was a total hoarder; I just tried not to open things I don't need to use till last minute in case of return.

I agree with pp that bottles, pump parts, etc. are a necessity. Plus, it is absolutely not a guarantee (although likely) that bf will be successful.

I did not personally use a bouncy seat as much..probably because of the one we chose. But, I used our stroller (car seat attached to stroller) daily from day 1. It was important for me to get out of the house on walks during leave.

we needed bottles and a variety of bouncy seats/swings immediately. We had 1 set of bottles ready to go (Avent) and had huge leaking issues with them, so we had to immediately run out when LO was a newborn and buy/try different kinds. I wish I had had more than 1 set on hand day 1, as it could have saved some stressful days.

LO had colic and was VERY VERY VERY particular about what kinds of seats/swings she would tolerate. Needless to say, thank God Amazon has overnight shipping. We bought several different seats within the first month.
