@Nutella: lol, the finish is pretty awesome! i just got my gel mani/pedi and wow it wasn't cheap but I feel so much more put together! I'll have to see how my nails do the second time around, I guess. How often do you get yours? I'm planning to hold off as long as I can obviously, and probably try to diy remove it before I go back.

@BabyTsMom: i took a long break from gel manis during my pregnancy and then BFing my LO, and recently started again. I can immediately notice my cuticles go crazy dry and red, and my nails afterwards are usually drier and weaker...but mine have always been prone to split since I hit my mid twenties 🤔 I once spilled acetone on my floor trying to DIY the removal and it sizzled off the top layer of the floor, so I'm always feeling a bit of a rebel when I do it! I know my nails don't love it - but I can't resist the perfect finish! 💅🏽

I'll be the odd gal out and say gel polish damages my nails. I love the convenience of no dry time and how long they last so I'll get them done for a vacation or big wedding weekend but not any other time. I don't have dry or weak nails and I had the Polish taken off the right way and my nails have been dry and weak after every time. I dont know if its the polish or the acetone. For me a regular pedicure lasts a long time so I've never done gel polish on my toes.

Typically, continued use of the gel shouldn't affect your nails. If you peel them off early or take them off yourself, you'll damage the nails bc you're taking the top layer of nail off. I've had them for over a year, pretty much constantly. I stopped when I first got pregnant because I was on promethazine for nausea and you're supposed to be careful about uv rays. Also, you should always put sunscreen on your hands too protect from the light they use to dry them. Gel is also better for your nails than acrylic.

ETA: my nails have always been really strong and hard and I haven't seen any difference when I've taken a break from the gel, except that they look a lot more ragged and unkempt!! Lol

@wheres_c: same, except I go every two weeks. I think I went 6 months straight this past fall/winter and there was no damage - and I have thin nails to begin with.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can "fill" a gel mani. At least it's not offered any place I've ever been.

I get a gel mani/pedi every 3 weeks. The only time my nails get damaged is if I try and peel the gel off. The acetone is fine.

I read somewhere that you should only wear gel polish for 14 days in a row and then take a week off. So do it for two weeks and then do a week of a regular polish and then go back to gel for another two weeks.

I got two in a row when I was getting married and then I needed to go without for a while to get my nails back to regular health.

I don't think the acetone hurt them as much as the buffing of the nails before painting to make sure it sticks. I only do them occasionally now. And in light colors so I can let them grow out as much as possible before removing/repainting.

I recently had my first gel mani and pedi and I loved it. I would love to stick to these from now on, but I"m worried about the soaking in acetone to remove the gel- If I'm doing it like every 4-6 weeks, is it going to damage my nails? Also, has anyone ever gone in for just the filler where there is new growth?
