I'm doing mine at Chirstmas, and so it will be more of a family thing. Like an added-bonus for Christmas dessert time.

Had it fallen at another time of the year, I would have made up e-invitations and told people to come have some bubbles and cake with us, and find out if we're having a girl or boy. I'd emphasize that it's not a shower and make it a fun, casual evening party. But that's just my style. Maybe you want to make it more structured.

We did one. We just text immediate family like siblings, parents, grandparents and said if they wanted to know to meet at our house at a certain time and day. We also asked that they come dressed in pink or blue depending on what their prediction was. They wanted to kill us for making them wait, but it was so fun to see all their faces at the same time. It you search Pinterest there's tons of great party ideas.

I had planned to but now it looks like we won't be able to make it home while I'm pregnant. I had planned on having a baby shower with a gender reveal. Anyway, now that we probably won't be able to make it home, we will have to do both the baby shower and the gender reveal via video conferences... skype. :/ Just doesn't seem as fun to do it over skype.

We did an impromptu one. I didn't want to know the sex but at the ultrasound, Josh was really pressuring for it. To him, knowing if we were having a boy or girl was going to help him bond and feel more attached to the baby (at least that is what he said).

We had the tech put the gender in an envelope and I was going to have a cutesy party a week or so later to unveil but Josh needed to know immediately so we called up our family and had an unveiling BBQ that night. We have it on tape. It was a lot of fun.

@yin - awww, so cute! although i'm not sure ellie grasped what was being said and done haha.

@habesbabe - yeah, the dad definitely was disappointed because he clearly said "boy!" i wouldn't have a gender surprise party where we didn't know beforehand because i think my husband and i should know first and like you said, we wouldn't want to show our "disappointment"... but i do think it would be fun to do with just our immediate family. meaning - SMALL and intimate but also fun. especially since they already knew we were doing fertility treatments so when we told them, they were excited but not surprised.

While I can't see myself having a gender party, I do love the idea of finding out the gender at home with a cake. I felt like I couldn't jump for joy while the ultrasound tech was there, and I would have loved to celebrate the gender reveal face to face with my husband.

@tequiero21: Sarah Chen recently posted a video of her daughter opening a big box to reveal a bunch of pink balloons. It was their way of telling their daughter that she will be having a little sister on the way. Too cute!

@habesbabe, I totally agree with you. I think they're a bit much but it's definitely a cute idea. I also feel that way about 1st birthday parties too, though. It's a lot of "celebrating us" going on and that's just not our style. I can't wait to find out the gender while it's just the hubs and me looking at that ultrasound...with the u/s tech, of course. :)

I think it's a really cute idea, but part of me wonders why everything needs to have some grand hoopla (not just baby-related, but big elaborate ways of asking people to be in your wedding party, big elaborate ways of telling people you're pregnant, etc.).

I'm still on the fence about these "gender parties," especially if mom or dad are really hoping for a boy or a girl. Like the video above; the mom seemed a lot more excited than the dad did. I wouldn't want to have to fake a reaction with so many people watching.

@lattelove - saw the video - i LOVED their reactions! priceless!

One of my dear friends hosted one after I told her about the idea (I'd seen it on a blog).
They invited both of their immediate families (who are nearby) and close friends - us!

The ultrasound was in the morning, so they brought the secret sheet of paper to the bakery, explained what to do, and picked up the cake a few hours later. The bakery put the colored icing in the middle layer and frosted the top white with pink and blue sprinkles.

There weren't any decorations, just a guessing chart with blue and pink rattles. It was very simple and sweet.
Here's a video I took of the moment we all found out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QZzQk-CATE
Of course, we would have been just as excited either way, but it made it seem really real when you knew the gender.

I am thinking of having a gender party when we find out the sex of our baby. (Which is still a minimum of 9 weeks away) lol. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to go about planning one, who to invite, etc... I've never been to one, but it seems like so much fun. (You know... you don't know the sex and you have the Dr. put it in an envelope then give it to the cake maker and have a party where everyone finds out at the same time as you cut the cake to reveal pink or blue frosting.)
