We don't want to know the sex of the baby, so we won't be having one of these.

Also, like some previous posters, I'm not a fan of the concept. I can understand wanting to a small announcement with the parents-to-be and MAYBE their immediate families, but throwing a whole party seems excessive.

Then again, I don't even want to have a shower, so maybe I'm not the best judge on this.

Eh, not a fan of them, and personally, would never throw such a party. I'm with @rattles: that they seem self-involved.

But of course, to each their own :)

@court_schaeff: I think it's a great idea! I'm definitely going to do a gender reveal party, although I feel like the cupcake idea is done a bit too much so I want to find something else.

We'll probably keep to mostly family and close friends and since we're moving in the next few months as well, we'll probably label it a "happy house-warming/gender reveal" party.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do!! :)

I haven't been to one, but I think they are fun! I love the ideas I have seen on pinterest where guests wear buttons or clothespins that indicate their guess (bows for girls and mustaches or bowties for girls for example).
The hershey bar favors are super cute too.

I agree. If I were to have ons it'd be our immediately families. Parents siblings and their families. I'm the baby of my family and my sister "passed down the torch" as she called it the last time she gave birth. Lol just want to try and do something different. I'm the first to get married and then start a family so its kind of a big deal.

I've been to two - one with the box of balloons and one with a pink-filled piñata. They weren't a bad time or anything, but I don't really care for them. They strike me as a bit self-involved if they're a huge thing in addition to showers and such. I agree that they're best when a small, family affair. But that's just my opinion, of course!

We had one with a cake that the grandma's cut to reveal the gender (we found out first so we had some time to know just the two of us.)

We attended on a few months ago where hte parents didn't know and they opened a box to reveal balloons of the gender. it was fun.

My friends have done on for each of their three children. The first one, they had people come wearing either blue or pink to represent what they thought it was going to be. The other two have been just to stop by, have a beer, eat some snacks, and watch them open the envelope. Laid back and fun--I get nervous for them!

I went to one for a friend and it was really cute. It was dinner and cake, the cake was colored inside for the gender. It wasn't super elaborate but she had some decorations and did an old wives tale board and had people make guesses. I think it was a fun time for them to get together to celebrate with friends and family, especially since he was involved then whereas he won't be for the shower.

If we hadn't been Team Green I would have wanted to do some sort of gender reveal at our baby shower. Colored cake or cupcakes or something, I dunno. I wouldn't have had a separate party for it, though.

We attended one. The parents had two dozen cupcakes made, and only one of the cupcakes had the gender colored frosting in the middle. It was fun as everyone tore into their cupcakes to see if they held the "golden ticket".

We wanted to do one, but never got around to it. We did something fun when we revealed to family though.

I think the key is to keep them really light and casual. The reveal is most important for the parents, maybe the grandparents, so as long as your guests are cool with this kind of stuff, it's ok.

I think they're fun! People give them a lot of grief though... I think it depends on your group of people. I did not have a good group of people to do a gender reveal party, so I just had DH's family over for dinner and surprised them with pink cupcakes and pink frosting to 'reveal' the gender. Tame, but fun to at least get to do a special dinner :)

Our friends did one in combination with their co-ed shower. They had a friend make cake balls, but only ONE of the cake balls had the correct colored filling/cake! All the other ones were white cake. So it was almost like a lottery/sex reveal party. Very cute, but the execution could have been better.

The mom's brother purposely looked for a cake ball that was darker than the others so he knew it would be the special one. Once he picked it, I tried to either get the mom and dad to eat it, or even the grandparents, but no one seemed to care/mind, so he bit into it to reveal blue cake! Bummer was that the dad-to-be was outside grilling, so he wasn't even in the same room when it happened!

We were team green, so it wasn't an option for us, but I went to a friend's while I was pregnant. Really casual, just dinner and surprise blue filled cupcakes.

I dunno, I guess it was fun, and nice that she wanted to include people in the process. Always nice to get together for a happy occasion.
