We did genetic counseling and it was extremely informative. We were so glad to have done it and when they calculated our probabilities, we opted not to do further testing on us.

Thanks ladies! I'm sure I will have more questions come tomorrow. If we do go down the IVF path, we will have to do PGD. My carrier status has beenconfirmed many times over the years. My husband's mom says he's the only one of her 3 kids to have the carrier gene but he doesn't remember when it was confirmed. I'm guessing he will likely have to get bloodwork.

I've talked with my OB a few times already but nothing really serious as we have a bit of a wait. She is the one who suggested we see the genetic counselor to get more information about the thalassemia and our options for having a baby.

Glad to hear (and read) about so many IVF success stories. I'm secretly hoping for boy/girl twins and the being done.

Thanks again ladies!

No IVF experience but my doctor may send us out to a geneticist when it can be arranged (we live in the mide of nowhere and there is a chance I could be a carrier for hemophilia). Thinking of you!

I had a great ivf experience! Babies stuck first try in July 2011. Sucked having to take so many shots everyday, but in the end, was well worth it. Now, my babies are a year old. Let me know if u have questions. We didn't do any genetic counseling though since we weren't a big risk anywhere.

I did genetic counseling a few weeks ago, and I'm waiting for my blood work back so I'm not sure if I am a carrier for anything, but I was tested for the Jewish panel. I'm not sure if your appointment will be similar to mine, because you already know you have a condition, but my appointment was basically answering a lot of questions about our family history and then discussing the risks. We also discussed the effect of other medical issues briefly (there are a few auto immune diseases at play) but they were not really relevant to the generic counselor. He will likely only advise you about the genetic condition and not the other medical issues.

It sounds to me like you likely should make a separate appointment with an ob who is experienced in high risk to discuss the other medical issues and any impact they may have, but I would wait and see what happens at the appointment on Monday so the ob can take into account what the genetic counselor says as well. Good luck!!

I don't have any experience with genetic counseling but I went through IVF. There are many women here who went through the process as well. Emotionally it was a tough experience for me but it was worth it as I'm now 31 weeks 5 days pregnant. Good luck with the genetic counseling appointment.

I think there was a recent post on the blog about genetic counseling. Are you going to do IVF with PGD to get around your carrier status? In our testing leading up to IVF we found out that DH was a carrier for Canavan but it wasn't enough to need PGD (which was fortunate for us in the end because I didn't have a lot of embryos to work with). From what I've heard, with PGD once the embryos reach a multi-cell stage they remove a cell from each embryo and test it for abnormalities and then only consider the normal embryos for transfer. If you have questions about the IVF process there are several ladies on the infertility board who are either currently going or have recently gone through the process and can tell you about it!

My husband and I are both carriers for a genetic condition. Based on our mothers' admittedly old, outdated understanding of this condition, we knew trying for baby may end up being difficult. We are thinking of starting a family in the next 18 months and are looking into our options.

We are meeting with a genetic counselor on Monday and I'm a bit nervous. I've got a few complicated medical issues that mean I will be high risk even without this genetic condition in play.

Do any of you lovely ladies have any experiences that you care to share about genetic counseling or the IVF experience? I'm hoping to ease so my of concern. Bless my husband's heart he tries, but he doesn't quite understand.
