@wonderstruck: I'm with you on that. I definitely would want him wiped down beforehand as well.

Mine was planned, but I was given no options at all.

While I definitely did not (and would not) want to watch it happen, I was never given the option to hold DS after he was born. They showed him to me, let us take pics (DH held him) and that was it. My arms weren't tied down or anything, but they definitely were shaking uncontrollably. Then they took him for what seemed like forever to weigh him and all, then I didn't get to see him again until the recovery room (where he was with my husband) a good 15-20 minutes later. It was weird and lonely - I was "alone" while they stitched me up.

This is the norm at my hospital regardless of whether or not it's an emergency c-section.

Gonna be honest, I let them wipe him down first because I'm super squeamish. But as soon as they were done I held him the whole time they were stitching me up and as they wheels me to the recovery room. Before heading from moms here I didn't really realize that wasn't the norm everywhere!

My hospital does routine gentle cesareans...as long as they aren't emergency's. Mine was planned (breech) so I had one. I didn't have my arms or anything strapped down, I was given the option to watch, I got him instantly on my chest, and he never left my side. We also had the 'magic' hour.

@yoursilverlining: I LOVE your last paragraph. So. Freaking. True.

I gave birth. It was also an operation. End of story.

I did, in the beginning of April. My c-section was planned, and while I did not have the clear curtain (wasn't into seeing my insides on my outside.... so I didn't even ask about this), my son was brought around to me as soon as he was born and I was able to hold him immediately. I started getting shakey/nauseous though, so the pediatrician took him to get checked out. Once I was feeling better, they brought him back, and he stayed with me the entire time. My husband held him by my head while I got sewn up, then once the curtain was down, he was placed on my chest and we rode like that to the post-surgery recovery room (via the hospital bed). He was with me the entire time in recovery, and stayed with me (on my bed) while we rode up to my postpartum room.

It was amazing, and I was thrilled to be able to hold him immediately. I was unable to do so with my daughter (4 years ago) because she was immediately taken to the NICU.

This is the norm at the hospital where I gave birth. I was not strapped down or held down in any way, we had immediate skin-to-skin and I/DH had the option of watching the birth (we didn’t want to). My OB also talked me through every single step of what was happening, so I knew exactly what was going on and what they were doing at all times. LO wasn’t separated from me when they stitched me up (well, just the routine measure/weigh/check her for a few minutes, then I got her back) and we were wheeled together into the recovery room where we got the usual "golden hour".

As an aside, the first article headline really bugs me too – caesarean birth IS birth, whether “gentle” or not. It isn’t “more like” birth – it IS birth. It is also an operation, but it is giving birth. Stop the continued birth shame, journalists.

Has anyone heard of this or had one??

I'm having my second scheduled c-section and REALLY would like this to be an option. I'm going to bring it up with my ob at my next appt.
