I had diet controlled GD with my second and third babies but suspect I developed GD late in my first pregnancy and it went undiagnosed.

@BadgerMom: oh and I was monitored more with my 2nd because of the GD - weekly ultrasounds to measure weight and monitor movement and practice breathing. I didn’t mind. And because of it we saw there was low fluid so I’m glad for the monitoring.

#2 - yes
#3 - no GD

My GD baby was average size at a little over 7 pounds. My 1st was huge at over 10.5 pounds and my 3rd was tiny at just over 5 pounds. So each pregnancy was definitely different.

@BadgerMom: Monitored longer because they test for GD earlier if you had GD with previous pregnancies. They were able to detect a heart condition due to earlier monitoring and then later there was concern for size.

@hummusgirl: Interesting. I've been asking to have my A1C done every year at my annual physical. The doctor kinda looks at me like it's overkill since I don't have any other risk factors for diabetes, but stories like yours make me feel like its a good idea.

@BadgerMom: I had my A1C done about a year after giving birth to my second because I was feeling very thirsty all the time, and then a couple times after that - the last one was back to normal.

@hummusgirl: That is an interesting turn of events. Did you have your A1C done between pregnancies? How long after your second were you diagnosed?

@Ms.Mermaid: @MrsBucky: Thanks! That gives me hope, but I'm not too optimistic.

@yin: Why did they monitor you more with the second? Was it because the baby was small, or did they find that out with the additional monitoring?

I came to an agreement with my OB that as long as my GD was well controlled with diet, she wouldn't use just the diagnosis to base any additional monitoring or interventions on. I was find with additional monitoring or needed interventions if they were required, but I was worried about having the the GD blanket placed over my pregnancy unnecessarily. I went into labor naturally before my 38 week appointment, so we never really made it to the point of having to discuss additional monitoring and such. I have a different OB this time, so it's nice to see others experiences.

Both pregnancies I had GD, and I was able to control it with diet. I was monitored longer for my second pregnancy, and there were concerns that the baby was too small. Both kids were born without complications on time. My second was bigger than my first by 3 oz at 6 lbs.

I haven't had it, but it is possible you won't. My friend who did have it with her first did not have it with her second or third. I passed my one hour the first time, and failed it the second time (but passed the three hour). My understanding is that there are factors that make it more likely you'll have it in general, and if that's true, your chances of recurrence are higher, but ultimately it's about how each unique placenta processes glucose. Until I failed my one hour I had no idea that ALL pregnant women have a reduced ability to process glucose, it's just about whether or not that reduction is dangerous or not. Bah! So annoying!

Everyone I know had it with their first and not their second besides me. I've had it both times, and this second time has been so much harder to control. I'm already on Metformin to reduce my fasting numbers and it's been a struggle.

I had it with my first (diet-controlled) but not with my second. A couple years after that, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes though and now try to watch my carbs a bit more. Hope you're in the clear!

@BadgerMom: my ob told me that since I had such an easily controlled case I would be less likely to have it again. But I can't answer whether that was true or not as we haven't been able to get pregnant again yet

@BadgerMom: I'll ask around, because now that you mention it there is a little nagging in my brain that an acquaintance had it first time only. But you are right, you don't really hear about that scenario.

@Mrsbells: That's what I keep hoping, but I'm not too confident I'll be unique in this sense.

@Sams Mom: Thanks! The only people I know who've had it had it both times, or in subsequent pregnancies but not their first. It doesn't seem like there's many anecdotes out there that had it the first time and not the second.

I worry about it especially with PCOS. Glad I didn't have it with my first two but I remember having more worrisome symptoms with my second. Makes me wonder how my third will go.

If you had GD with your first pregnancy did you have it with your second (or subsequent) pregnancies?

I was a pretty mild gestational diabetic with my first (very easily diet controlled), and I'm just assuming I'll fail again this pregnancy, but I thought I'd put it out there for a pole to see what happened to others.
