I also had GD with my first pregnancy. I thought it was so weird because no one in my family has ever had diabetes and I had been in shape prior to getting pregnant. But it actually helped me to eat better...some foods I ate were:
1/2 cup oatmeal for breakfast with a cup of fat free milk
scrambled eggs in a low carb tortilla
some fruit but not until later in the day and lots of celery (with light cream cheese or peanut butter)

Those helped but walking and pregnancy yoga helped more than anything else to keep my blood sugar down. I actually lost a little weight and started looking really good at 8 months pregnant. I was all belly and had that famous glow thanks to eating right. My face and legs shrunk as well.
But I did have a few sweets in moderation as along as I checked my blood sugar and kept it until 120 (and I did that only by excersise)

@Thehistoryofus and @hreichard: Thank you so much for commenting. My husband and I are both looking at this as a good reminder to have better eating habits and making this a more permanent change for us and the baby. I'm nervous about the possible risks to my baby and my delivery, but my Dr. said as long as we manage it now, I should be okay. And actually, my baby was at a higher risk of developing diabetes due to my family history than because of this.

I had gestational diabetes and I just read the labels on everything, ate a lot of grilled meats, lots of vegetables, watched my carbs and sugar intake. I drank a lot of water. Just watch what you eat and you will be fine. Also, if you notice your blood sugar is up some, exercise, simply walk and that will help lower it.

So, I got the call I was dreading yesterday and I have GD. I was really hoping I would be like all of my friends who failed the one hour test, but passed the 3 hour test. I think I'm almost over feeling sad for myself especially when there are lots of other women who have much more serious problems to deal with in their pregnancies. This is totally manageable. Also keeping it in perspective for me is my sister who is an insulin dependent diabetic and has been eating a super strict diet for the past 6 months just to prepare to be pregnant.
Any help/advice/meal ideas from other moms who had to deal with this would be very appreciated.
