@tinyperson: My OB called, hallelujah!

She was shocked that I failed so awfully since I technically fasted before the test... unintentionally, my test was scheduled for 9 and we got up late. I hadn't had anything to eat since the night before & only had coffee that morning.

Anyway... She said if my score was over 200 they'd send me straight to MFM. Or, if I was 32 weeks they'd send me to MFM with a score of 182.

But I'm 26 weeks and we "have plenty of time" (I was worried I'd be wasting an entire week without eating properly or getting my glucose under control) so she advises the 3-hour test, and we will discuss results next week.

Ugh. What a pain. Hope you get it all straightened out. If you end up with GD, feel free to message me if you have questions. It ended up not being too bad, and bonus - I gained very little weight (15-20lbs)!

Thanks for the encouragement, I am SO GLAD I called.

I am also beyond livid. This is now my third request to speak to an actual OB, and have yet to get a call back. Women from the front reception keep returning the call and telling me what the OB said.

Whoever I talked to yesterday really didn't know what she was doing. She passed the incorrect message along to my doctor, and passed the incorrect message from the OB back to me. Not only that, but my glucose numbers were worse than I originally thought. Not by much. She told me 180, I found out today the actual number was 182.

And yes, I CAN have water. It's also 10 hour fasting, not 12.

The woman I spoke to this morning said since I failed so miserably, the OB might want me to go straight to MFM to learn how to control GD so she is going to call the doctor and find out what I should actually do.

WHAT A FREAKING MESS. I've never had an issue with this office before. Idk who these girls are... I've never talked to anyone there other than the receptionist and one of the OBs.

@mrs. jump rope sorry to hear you have to do the 3 hour. I know with my 1 hour test they encouraged me to drink water before and after I finished the sugary drink. I had 2-3 small water cooler sized glasses before they drew my blood.

I would call back and clarify if you have questions. I failed my first test, so had to do the second one (and failed that too) and I wasn't allowed water during that test, so it's possible they may not allow you to have water. I have bad veins too, so I hear ya! Hope you get a better answer :)

I feel dumb for asking this..

My OB was supposed to call yestetday, but another woman in the office did instead. I have no idea who she was and she wasn't able to answer any of the questions I had. All she told me was I need to take the 3-hour test and had to fast, including no water.

My question to that was, really?! I am easily dehydrated and easily drink 12 16oz bottles of water a day. I've had difficult blood draws because of poor veins due to dehydration, so I can only imagine how much FUN four blood draws are going to be.

Would you call back and clarify? I'm still angry that my OB didn't call herself, but I'm wondering if the first girl didn't leave a proper message.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: The person who did my one hour test was horrible. I think she got offended and took it out on me when my husband told her that it was ridiculous that I wasn't allowed to drink water, since the amount of water in your system has no bearing on your glucose levels. The guy who did my three hour test rocked! He was really nice, gentle, and I didn't bruise either.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: You might call and ask the lab doing the test about no water....I work in a doc office and we regularly do 3 hour GTT tests to check patients for diabetes and we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE water. The more water the better. Everything else is off limits though. Also with the 3 hour test you will go in fasting and have your blood taken...drink the sugary drink and then wait an hour just like before. You will have your blood drawn 2 more times. Fasting, 1 hour post drink and 2 hours post drink. You should be allowed to drink a glass of water in that time as well, and just like before, no eating or sleeping or much activity. Make sure you take something with you to each afterwards as you will definitely want/need to eat something after the final draw. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

@avivoca: I hope it's the same girl who was there last Saturday. She kicked so much ass and I told her so. I really do have awful veins and was stuck 17 times including 4 butterfly needles for one of my betas. It was embarassing and it hurt. This girl took one try and I didn't even bruise. She's a rockstar.

@bushelandapeck: thanks! I was pleasantly surprised at the waiting room for my one hour test. They had comfortable oversized recliners and a tv with cable. I imagine at 6:45 I'll be the only person there! Regular blood test people sat in the general waiting area, where I thought of be. I'll be sure to bring a book and my phone charger, too.

@gingerbebe: thanks! I did ask and no, they insist I take the 3-hour test. My husband is convinced I failed because of my coffee creamer. They said I didn't have to fast so I had coffee with creamer in the morning, about an hour before my test. I guess he could be right, but I'm not holding out any hope. I don't think a bit of creamer would make me fail so miserably.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Er, 6:45 is hella early. I hope you get a good tech who is doing the blood draws. Ask them to alternate arms when drawing, as that significantly reduced my pain. I also hope you are able to drink water. I wasn't, and it was a kind of fresh hell since I craved water throughout my pregnancy.

Crap, I wrote a really long response but then HB ate it. I think if you just WANT to go ahead and be treated for GD without the 3-hour, most doctors will let you. I'm contemplating doing that myself instead of taking my SECOND 3-hour test of this pregnancy.

RE: vegetarian diets, I have heard from multiple people that the best thing for regulating their blood sugars is peanut butter or basically any kind of nut. The fat and protein really kept their numbers down and did a far better job than cheese or dairy. One lady I know eats a few spoonfuls of PB straight before she goes to bed and it keeps her fasting sugars down. So perhaps that's something that will work for you?

Good luck! The water thing was the worst for me too, although my lab let me take a few sips of water during the 3-hour exam because I assured them that I would die without it. Pack a small snack (I brought half a sandwich on whole wheat) to eat as soon as the test is over and drink as much water as possible on Thursday night!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. It was just a larger version of the 1 hour liquid and I was able to have water once I took it. I had a blood draw before I drank it and then at 1, 2, 3 hours, for a total of 4 blood draws. It was really boring. I recommend bringing an Ipad or a book!

@T.H.O.U.: yup, no food or drink for 12 hours before test.

I'm being a whiny baby. Food I can do, but my veins SUCK and without being hydrated, it's going to be a painful and difficult blood draw. I also drink a crap ton of water a day, so I'm going to be hurting. I wake up and drink water a few times at night!

What were your numbers for your 1-hour test? I was a 205 and they sent me straight to an endocrinologist and was treated as if I had GD.

I never met with a dietitian, but it would have been so helpful. I managed my condition with diet and exercise and really needed help with the diet part. I did a ton of my own research and got a lot of good stuff by being diligent with it.

I don't have experience with vbac, so not sure how it would change your status. LO was small, but he got stuck on my pelvis, so I had to have an emergency C-section. I'm planning on a C-section again if we're lucky enough to have another.

As for a vegetarian diet, you'll definitely need protein. I was huge on peanut butter and veggies.

@HLK208: I make a bad vegetarian. I don't eat tofu or eggs. I don't drink milk and if I can avoid cooking with it, I will.

I haven't a any red meat in 17 years, and I didn't eat chicken until I was pregnant with Chloe. Not pregnant, I eat it sparingly, maybe a few times a year (since my first pregnancy). I craved it again this pregnancy, but now I can't stomach it. I've thrown it up the last three times I've had it, so I'm saying goodbye to chicken again.

I eat a lot of beans, but that's about it.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: booo :( hoping you pass the 3 hour!

I've heard of a lot people not passing the 1 hour, by a lot but then passing the 3 hour.

Personally, my glucose test for the 1 hour with each pregnancy was always 1-2 points over the normal range and I failed my 3 hour. I didn't even fail this time, I only had one number that was elevated by 1 point over the normal range and my OB diagnosed me with GD.

You will most likely have to meet with a dietician and diabetic nurse if you have it. I don't think it would be too difficult to be a vegetarian while on the GD diet - you do need a lot of protein but nuts, nut butters, cottage cheese, eggs and even whey protein powder are a good way to get enough protein in.

Hugs!

1) I don't know if your one hour number has any bearing on your 3-hour test. I failed my 1 hour, and then for my 3-hour I failed in the second hour, which my midwife constitutes as having GD.

2) They will probably ask you to meet with a dietician. I did not have to since my husband is Type 1 diabetic and I am familiar with the restrictions. They sent me on my way with a prescription for a glucose test monitor, strips, and lancets, as well as a pamphlet on GD and some things to look for.

3) I think it depends on your doctor whether or not GD impacts your VBAC status. This was my first child, but I asked about it when I found out, and at my practice having GD does not automatically require an induction or c-section. There is a concern for a big baby, but ultrasound can be wrong in guessing weight. I delivered a healthy 7 lb. 10.8 oz girl at 40w3d. I also did not have any growth ultrasounds.

4) You can have a healthy diet and be a vegetarian. I'm not vegetarian, but I had a meat aversion during the latter half of my pregnancy. I had to watch my carbs, and as long as I did that my numbers stayed where they should.

I was very angry when I found out, but it didn't impact me too badly. I lost about 10 pounds in a month after the diagnosis, but I ended up gaining 35 total by delivery. In hindsight, it encouraged me to be healthier and I was still able to have treats.

- does your 1-hour test numbers have any bearing on your 3-hour tolerance test? I failed hard core, so could we just assume I have GD? They did with me. Sent me right off to the diabetes clinic and didn't bother with the 3 hour.
- if I do have GD, will I meet with a dietician? yep...it's no big deal. If you failed miserably, you'll probably go on insulin.
- does this change my VBAC status? Only if you don't go into labor before 39 weeks. If you're on insulin, chances are you'll have a rcs at 39 weeks. (Normally induction)
- is it possible to have a healthy diet and be a vegetarian? Yep. Just balance the protein and the carbs well. I'm sure you know all the sources of good protein in a vegetarian diet.

I failed the one hour twice and technically passed the three hour both times. I had one high number the second time I took the three hour so I was treated as GD because I refused to take the test again.

I met with a dietician and she was helpful. I had to make sure to balance carbs with protein.

Wall me if you want to!

ETA - I thought it was the end of the world but it really wasn't too bad!

I don't have a ton of advice, but I've heard it's REALLY common to fail the 1-hour test! Which is why my office doesn't even do it!

Good luck to you! I really hope you pass the 3-hour test!!!
