I didn't have GD for both my pregnancies, but unfortunately had pretty low supply for both babies anyway. I did everything 'right' (especially the 2nd time), so I know it wasn't anything I did or didn't do -- seems like I just naturally don't make enough milk! We'll see for #3 and try again, cause it'd be great not to have to BF and bottle feed for each feeding like the other two :).

@cornucopia8: No prob! also find out if there is a lactation consultant in your area that your insurance will cover. They do in some states. I know its expensive but you usually get free follow up calls with them too.

@yin: @curlymama318: @snowjewelz: Thank you!
@lady grey: Thank you! I'll check it out!
@youboots: I saw a LC in the hospital before we were discharged. She said the latch was good and I haven't had any nipple pain. I haven't seen one in a month but am considering it, I just am cheap about parting with $200 for the consult.

I had GD and while I don't have great supply, I am juuust able to meet DD's demand. Your body could still be trying to regulate supply... Plus they have so many growth spurts early on that they are always acting hungry! Pumping 1-2 oz per session after nursing is actually not bad at all! Hang in there!

I have had Diabetes since I was almost 9. I was a super producer at 10-12 oz from each breast at each pumping session. I exclusively pumped. I think each woman is just different. Hope things get better for you!

I had GD and started at 5'4" and 135 and was low risk also. My daughter is 5 weeks and so far no supply issues.

Have you seen a LC?

I had GD with all three of my pregnancies but BF'd past a year with my first two and plan to BF past a year with my third as well (have made it to nearly 9 months so far). I've always had a decent supply though.

@cornucopia8: Is there a chance you could have insufficient glandular tissue?

I would look into taking Goats Rue, it may be more effective for you. There is some info here:
http://www.herbwyfery.com/goats-rue/
and here:
http://www.lowmilksupply.org/goatsrue.shtml

You could also talk with your PCP about trying reglan or domperidone. You'll need prescriptions for those.

I just had my GD baby yesterday and i'm really curious to see how long it takes me to get my milk in this time around. There is definitely a link between GD and bfing problems and with my first baby it took almost a week to get my milk in a and i now suspect i developed undiagnosed GD later in the pregnancy. I wouldn't say i had issues with supply as such but i did have to eat a tonne of calories while breastfeeding.

I had GD and haven't had a problem with my milk supply. LO is 7 months old and I've been BF and pumping the whole time. I used mothers milk plus but only once a day for awhile now.

I had GD with both of my pregnancies, and my LOs were small at around 6 lbs each. I'm also petite at 5'3 and 110 lbs, only gaining about 15 lbs with each pregnancy. I exclusively pumped with LO1, and it took a little over a month for my supply to meet my LO's demand. I went on to EP for a year and didn't have issues with my supply (only frequent clogged ducts and mastitis from pumping). I was able to successfully breastfeed LO2, and we're still going strong at 17 months.

Try to take it one day at a time. When I EP'ed with my first LO, I made small goals for myself to help me get through the rough days of pumping. I worried a lot about my supply initially, and the stress was not good for my mental health. Don't forget to focus on yourself too.

I had GD for my last pregnancy and it did not affect my supply at all. I nursed almost exclusively during my maternity leave but I also pumped for 25-30 minutes several times a day to freeze milk for when I returned to work. I chose to supplement with formula for the first week after my c-section but I did not have to supplement after that.

I was GD during pregnancy, but never showed any signs of being diabetic before getting pregnant. I'm 5'1, 110 lbs, and before getting pregnant I had a BMI of 18, did yoga, ran, and kept up a pretty good exercise regimen - I never fit the "typical" diabetic pattern.

I'm currently 4 weeks postpartum and struggling with breastfeeding. I'm supplementing with formula to meet about 2/3 of baby's needs and breastfeeding/pumping the other 1/3. I haven't been able to exclusively breastfeed, because baby doesn't seem to be satisfied after emptying both breasts and screams in hunger. I've resorted to the bottle, but am wondering if anyone has any experience with this? I just saw a study that links GD to low milk supply, but never heard anything about it before looking up articles online.

Diabetes Affects Breastfeeding:
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/825625

I've been pumping/BFeeding around the clock and taking all the herbs and supplements I can - Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, brewers yeast, water, barley and oatmeal. I pump maybe 1-2 oz per session. Not ready to give up yet, but wanted to know if other diabetics have struggled with this?

My baby was definitely not born with macrosomia, and came in as a petite 5-pounder!
