With my OB's office, which is connected to a hospital, with both my GD diagnoses, I had to go to the diabetes clinic, which meant meeting with a dietitian, attending a class, then meeting weekly with a nurse for weigh-in and BP and then the dietitian, endocrinologist, and perinatologist until my numbers were better, then I met with all of them every two weeks. I also had ultrasounds every two weeks.

I was just diagnosed Monday and had an appointment today and the doctor won't tell me anything besides that the baby is growing normal. Refuses an ultrasound, says I need a strict diet even though I haven't gotten a reading over 100. It's frustrating that they terrify you and tell you you're damaging your baby and then give you no help. I found out from my pharmacy, the doctor didn't even bother to call and tell me the results.

Both pregnancies I had GD and had to see a specialist to follow up. For my first, my fasting was also always high so I was put on a low dose med till the very end. I usually tried eat a high protein snack right before bed.

Thanks for your responses everyone. I called and left another message for the nurse yesterday with no response. I tried to call again this afternoon but the office had already closed so I'm calling first thing in the morning yet again. This is honestly getting a bit ridiculous.

@MelisMc: Thanks. I think it sounds like I probably need meds as well. I am doing well managing my other numbers with diet but there is only so much I can do about that fasting number.

@sapphire: I was surprised to see this too. I had GD twice and my OB handled it both times. She sent me to a diabetic counselor to get some general education, but I was never referred to an endocrinologist. Both times I had difficulty with my fasting similar to OP with high numbers, but honestly not through the roof.

My OB always told me I was a "good" GD patient in that I kept a log of everything in Excel and would just take her a printed copy for my file each visit. I owned up to what I ate bad and she appreciated my honesty.

Eta: I took glyburide both times in the evening to manage my fasting. I never had to get to insulin.

My OB had me see an endocrinologist for my GD. They were strict about control, and I appreciated that. I took a small dosage of insulin at night b/c nothing I did could help my fasting number.

It's a serious thing and I'm surprised your doctor isn't treating it that way.

In my practice, I see my patients weekly until their blood sugars are at goal. You definitely should have gotten a response. I do find it interesting that so many of you saw a specialist. I'm in family practice and definitely take care of my own patients with GDM - though I guess that's because I take care of lots of patients with diabetes in general.

I agree that this is not acceptable. This is my second pregnancy with GD and I am monitored by a specialist...I turn in my numbers every week and get feedback and I have to go in to see them every 2-3 weeks. They want my fasting to be under 85, so I think that there should be concern if yours is over 105 frequently. I would definitely insist on being referred to a specialist who can get you in soon. And it sounds like you might need meds for your fasting number- that is usually completely hormone related and not really able to be diet controlled. Feel free to ask any questions...I feel like an expert at this point! Ha.

Ditto what the other said. I was monitored by an endocrinologist and had to send her my numbers/meal plan weekly. If the numbers were too high she would call and we would discuss how I could try to get them down.
I would ask to be referred to an endocrinologist. While having GD isn't the worst thing, it's still something that needs to be monitored by an endo!

@Mrs. Washi Tape: high fasting numbers can be a cause for concern because they're the one number that you can't really control with diet alone. I would definitely push for a referral to an endocrinologist!

@ShootingStar @AJsMommy @AutumnLeaves: Thanks so much for responding. This helps confirm I'm not overreacting. I left another message this afternoon and if I don't hear back tomorrow, I will call again.

To make the whole thing much worse, at my first appointment with my ob following the diagnosis, he didn't even bring up gestational diabetes at all. He was wrapping up the appointment so I brought it up and then he talked to me about it for all of two minutes. So at this point, he isn't inspiring much confidence that he is on top of this. I did meet with a dietician which was helpful, but I expected to be monitored by a doctor as well!

My doctor had me go to a specialist like @Ajsmommy: and I emailed my numbers to her weekly. My issue was not my fasting level and I was able to control my GD without meds. I would definitely be bothered by a lack of response from my dr.

I turned in my numbers every week. My first week all numbers were good accept my fasting. They put me on meds immediately.

Eta : my fasting was supposed to be under 90

At my OB if you have bad numbers 3 times in a row they refer you to an endocrinologist. My endo was always super attentive. I could email her at any time with any concerns and she'd give me advice or adjust my meds. It may be that it's time for you to start taking insulin if you can't get your numbers in range with diet alone.

I am getting very frustrated with my OB doctor and need some outside perspective.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 14 weeks. This is my 3rd pregnancy but my 1st time with gd. I have been monitoring my blood sugar for 3.5 weeks now and my numbers are good after eating but my fasting number is always very high. It is supposed to be under 95 and it is between 105 and 120 everyday. I've tried adjusting my evening snack and haven't had any success with bringing the number below 105.

I called my OB and left a message with the nurse Thursday reporting this and asking what I should do since I don't have an appointment for another 2 weeks. It is now Monday and I still haven't gotten a return call. Honestly I don't know how serious my numbers are but I am getting pretty pissed that nobody has called me back. I know that my doctor's long-time nurse left and he was hiring someone new but in the past I have always had a call back within 24 hours at the most about any questions.

I was already very frustrated with some other things that have happened at my appointments lately so I don't know if that is coloring my perspective on this. But I'm wondering if you had gestational diabetes, how closely did your doctor monitor you? Would you consider this a big deal?
