@HLK208: Oh, and when I saw the dietician, she definitely said I had to eat carbs. It's funny cause my numbers will be ok or just slightly high when I think I eat more carbs than I should.

@HLK208: I was told below 90 in the morning and under 120 two hours after each meal. Honestly, 2 out of 7 days I'm probably over 90 but below 100. I also have random over 120s during the week and the doctors seem fine with my numbers. I do have weekly ultrasounds which started at 32 weeks to check on the baby.

I also tend to cheat some and my numbers haven't gotten worse.

@HLK208: My doctors told me 90 and below for morning fasting score and 130 and below for after meals (1 hour after the start of a meal). I think recommended carb intake for meals was 20-30 grams and snacks was 10-15 grams. I was able to control my GD with diet, but it was really hard at first. I also didn't follow the recommended meal carb intake because it was too high for me.

My typical meals looked like this...

Breakfast - oatmeal, eggs, bacon/sausage, 1/2 avocado
Snack (after breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - milk, peanut butter with celery, hummus with carrots, nuts or pretty much whatever I wanted to eat within reason as long as I ate my snack an hour - 2 hours after my meal
Lunch/Dinner - lots of veggies and protein (think Paleo diet)
Dessert - cake, ice cream ;)

The key for me was to keep my metabolism going throughout the day, which meant eating frequently. The morning meal started my metabolism, and I didn't want it to dip throughout the day because it would affect my glucose. So as long as I ate great meals, I was able to enjoy my snacks. Sometimes my snacks resembled more of mini meals, but it really worked for me. I went in for routine check ups (every month, which turned into every other week and then 3x a week), and DS2 was very healthy. He was actually on the smaller side, and the reason for the frequent check ups was due to his small size and not the other way around.

Oh and there are plenty of carbs in the food we eat. I chose to stick with healthy foods for my meal carb intake like vegetables and an occasional piece of fruit.

@Dandelion: I wasn't going to see the dietician since I did with DS and I remember most of the info (but she told me I needed a lot less carbs and I did but some days I would barely eat 1200 calories). But maybe I should one this time.

@HLK208: yep. I was only able to achieve it with insulin. Are you seeing a dietician for it? Even though you're borderline, it could be helpful. GD only gets worse as your pregnancy goes along because your hormone levels are rising. I'm definitely thankful that even though it was a lot of extra work, I stuck with the plan. Me and M weremuch healthier because of it.

If you're borderline, they should check your A1C which measures your glucose level across several weeks. With GD mine was 5.7 but with insulin and diet I got mine to 5.3, which is thr non-diabetic level.

You do NEED to eat carbs. Otherwise your liver makes the glucose and you have new problems. It's a crazy balancing act.

Bumping this.

I had GD with DS, borderline with DD and borderline again with DD2 now.

I remember I would usually have a half cup of oatmeal in the morning, celery with peanut butter mid morning, eggs for lunch, cottage cheese for a snack and some type of chicken lettuce wrap for dinner. I was always SO hungry though.

I need more ideas!

@Dandelion: ah, below 80 in the morning?? I was told under 100, under 140 two hours post meals...I don't think I could get under 80 unless I were to exercise before taking my blood sugar.

@MrsSpadusa: my nutritionist said that when I wake up it should be under 80 and an hour after meals it should be less than 120. I'm getting numbers way higher than that everytime no matter how hard I try.

What numbers did you guys have that we're considered too high? I was diagnosed with GD 2 weeks ago and have been pretty good about keeping my sugars "low"- generally below 150 and usually less then 130 with diet.
I did notice though that in the hospital I had about the same diet and my sugars were lower then they are at home. Only difference is my glucometer. Did you guys have any issues with yours?

@Dandelion: Since you don't have much time left you could ask about doing a long acting insulin, that works for about 18 hours. I think normally they'd have you do what I did - track meals and sugars for a while and then if you can't control it they'd talk insulin. But with not much time left you could always ask if you can start on insulin right away instead of having a week of bad sugars, then trying to adjust diet for a week or two etc, and meanwhile it's not under control.

@Dandelion: They had me fill out a log 4 times a day with my blood sugars and meet with a nutritionist and an endocrinologist. I was able to manage it for a long time with just diet and Metformin - from May to September (I found out at 10 weeks). But my endocrinologist didn't like me being on Metformin so long, even though it worked so well, and then my numbers kinda went to hell.

I kept in close contact with the endocrinologist and eventually she convinced me that we had such a short amount of time to make a difference - <10 weeks at that point, that I should try the insulin. I was SO resistant, but it ended up being absolutely necessary for me. As pregnancy goes on, it's really common for the placenta to block more and more insulin, which is what happened to me. As my doctor put it, you're constantly trying to hit a moving target.

If you have any questions about the insulin, let me know. I did 3 different types based on my lifestyle, but there's a ton of options. And the injections really are not bad at all. You can barely feel them.

Bumping this up, because I got the official diagnosis today! I have to be honest and say I'm really relieved, because after a preemie and a stillborn because of missing the diagnosis, I'm glad to know right away so that I can work on bringing a healthy baby home!

@ShootingStar: How did they decide you needed the injections? My sugar was so high, (187) they're skipping the 3 hour test. I'm wondering if they will consider it.

Green olives! There's no carbs in them, but there's also no protein. But, they are fatty, so they will help keep you feeling like you ate something. I don't like black olives, but I'm guessing they will have the same effect.

I had to take insulin for my fasting numbers and lunch, and I agree with @ShootingStar: it helped to take some of the food pressure off. Once you get over the needle part, it's easy!

I tend to eat a lot of meat and cheese.

For lunches I'll make turkey/cheese roll ups instead of sandwiches
Rotisserie chicken w/tortilla chips and spinach/artichoke dip
Dreamfields pasta (definitely MUCH better than whole wheat)
Nature Valley protein bars
Peanut butter and cheese crackers
Egg salad
Egg mc muffins (I used to get perfect numbers with these + a hashbrown, but as I got worse they stopped working as well)

I love peanut butter, but these days it doesn't not love me back. It gives me awful heartburn, but sometimes I just live with it. Like with breakfast, I eat 2 protein bars and they either incorporate "peanut" or "peanut butter" :-/. Oh well, less than a week left.

@lilteacherbee: I'm so picky, I don't like sugar free foods...artificial sweeteners just don't taste right to me.

I need to get used to peanut butter again. I got so sick of it when I was pregnant and nursing with DS that I got really turned off by it. But, it's SO good for filling me up, so I need to start getting back into it.

I only have 2 days left (and I've kinda fallen off the wagon since my numbers are always low anyway... Oops), but my big thing has been peanut butter. I'm able to have sugar free ice cream at night with a spoonful of peanut butter. I'm also not a fan of the fiber one bars.

I did eggs a lot too, but I'm picky and I only eat scrambled eggs so that made it more difficult.
