@photomommy: I've actually found that Whole Foods was kinda limited on the sugar-free stuff, so hopefully your store will be better than mine! Good luck!!!!!!

@MaisyMay: Oh, I miss Safeway! I'm a midwesterner living in the South and the grocery shopping is a little different. I'll definitely scour Whole Foods a little more thoroughly, and hope for some luck. Great tips on the sugar alcohol too, doesn't sound too fun!

@photomommy: You would be amazed at what you can find at safeway. One word of advice: be careful of sugar alcohols. If you eat too many in one sitting, you can get diahrea, not so fun. Sugar alcohols are a common replacement item in sugar-free products like candy or cookies and is often called malidextrose or just sugar alcohol. You can eat it, but no more than 1-2 servings at a time. :)

@MaisyMay: Thank you! I hadn't thought to look for low carb pasta etc. and sugar free oreoes... didn't know those existed! My dad is Type 1 diabetic so I should really know more about what's out there.

I don't have GD, rather I am type 2 diabetic, so I do feel you! Try to sub in low carb option in your favorite meals, low carb pasta, low carb tortillas, sugar free oreos, things like that. Also, remember that protein helps you digest the carbs better, so balance as much as you can. Fruit is good, but bear in mind that it has a lot of sugar, as does milk. Anything that ends in -ose is a sugar (glucose, fructose, lactose, etc).
Experiment! Some women who are diabetic can eat potatoes with no problem, others can't. Brown rice is better than white rice when it comes to starch.
Walking is amazing! I've eaten a burger and fries before, walked for an hour and actually had my sugar be too low, so walk when you can. It makes a huge difference. :)

awww welcome to the club!! I maintained mine with diet as well and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Two tips I have: 1) if you're going to eat something a little carb-heavy, drink a protein shake right before. I like the chocolate ones from Costco. I find that if I drink it ice cold with a straw it's really good and goes fast. Also, if you eat a meal that you suspect is gonna make you spike, just go for a long walk! I loved going to the Cheesecake Factory and splurging a bit (the low carb cheesecake is DELICIOUS!) then walking around the mall and shopping for baby clothes.

Hi Ladies! My first post here :) I am 32 weeks and dealing with gestational diabetes. It's under control with diet, but pretty cruel to keep a preggo from eating what she wants! I'm craving sweets and fruit so badly. Any good low carb recipe ideas out there?
