Research "free" foods and enjoy those until you talk to the nurse. Also, I would eat non-teriyaki jerky and nuts when I needed to fill up but it wasn't quite eating time yet.

GD can be so frustrating! I followed the plan they gave and my numbers were still sometimes high so I had to modify based on what worked for me. Here's a sample of a typical day:

Breakfast - 2 eggs, 1 piece whole wheat toast with lots of peanut butter

Snack - 1 peach with a lot of cottage cheese

Lunch - 1 bowl of beef chili or 1/3 rotisserie chicken or wrap with chicken, veggies, avocado, hummus AND carrots or tomatoes with hummus

Snack 1 - 1 apple with a bunch of peanut butter

Snack 2 - cheese and a couple crackers

Dinner - chicken and veggies

Nighttime snack - pear or cherries with lots of almonds or cottage cheese

As time has gone by I've learned when I can indulge in some chocolate. I've also stocked up on Nature Valley protein bars which are good snacks in a pinch.

It hasn't been easy and my doc actually said I haven't gained enough weight so I need to "force feed" myself now. But nothing too high in carbs, of course. It's a balancing act to get plenty of carbs so as not to have ketones in the urine (though it's debatable how much that matters), while gaining enough weight. I found the best thing was eating a LOT of protein, especially meat. I ate mostly vegetarian prior to this so it's been an adjustment, but now I feel kind of bad-ass and accomplished that I can stick my finger many times a day and keep my sugars under control like a boss. :-) Good luck!

I met with a diabetes nurse yesterday and learned more about gestational diabetes, how to monitor my blood sugar and I received a meal plan. I have been following the meal plan since lunch yest and I have been a hungry and irritable mess! I was trying to figure out why I was feeling so bad...duh, I forgot to mention that I am still breastfeeding! I think I will add some non starchy veggies to my diet until I can contact the nurse on Monday! I need more food!!! :-)
