i found out i had GD right before the Christmas holiday when i was pregnant with my son. great timing for watching what i had to eat during the most gluttonous time of the year! it was daunting at first when i met with the nutritionist and having to exercise portion control and not eat everything i wanted to eat. but as time wore on i got used to it and as my belly got bigger i realized that i couldn't eat huge meals anyway because i would get so full so fast with so little. so i ended up eating small meals anyway. below are some examples of what i would eat during certain mealtimes or snacks.

snacks: wheat thins, baby bell cheese, string cheese, nuts, whole wheat English muffins with PB, cottage cheese with fruit, yogurt

breakfast: rice (controlled portion), plain oatmeal, eggs with some veggies mixed-in, bacon, spam, sausage (i have always started my days with a full breakfast, i just had to cut down on my carbs and increase my protein intake)

lunch: Rubio's street tacos (perfect small size with lots of protein and guac!), salad with dressing on the side from Croutons, half sandwich with salad from cafeteria

dinner: rice with a meat and veggie dish, pasta (controlled portion), salmon with veggies, protein style burger (no bun)

lastly, if i felt like i truly binge ate a lot of unhealthy foods, i would take a walk right after i ate to help my blood sugar lower. i found this helped out with digestion overall too. sorry this is so long, but i wanted to help out a fellow GD mama. feel free to ask me questions about my experience with GD if you want.

@knittylady: fruit isn't always bad! Just usually not first thing in the morning as people with GD have higher numbers then

Here's what I had today (not all of it was healthy but my numbers were between 70-100 which is pretty normal)

B: a slice of whole wheat toast with smart balance and sugar free jam, a cup of 1% milk
S: 1 peach, string cheese and a drip coffee with 2 inches of cream.
L: (don't judge!) 6 piece chicken nuggets with small fries and diet coke
S: almond and peanuts + a cup of diet iced tea
Haven't had dinner yet but probably a salad and a veggie burger without a bun
S: maybe lowfat cottage cheese and a no sugar added fudgesicle

Other foods I eat often are: nature valley protein bars, beef jerky, celery and almond butter, hummus and naan bread, smart one's breakfast sandwiches, half of whole wheat turkey sandwiches with lots of veggies, big salads, hard boiled eggs, green smoothies (but I keep the carbs to be around 25 grams so half banana, 1/4 cup blue berries, 1/4 cup yogurt and 2 cups spinach)

My main problem was not eating enough carbs at first. Your nutritionist will want you to eat a certain amount of carbs, protein, fat and fruit at each meal but here's how it was broken down for me...at least for carbs (1 serving = 15 grams)
B: 1.5 servings
S: 1.5
L: 3.5
S: 1.5
D: 3.5
S: 1.5

I was just diagnosed with GD last night (bummer). I'm feeling really down and freaked out about it, and still have to meet with a nutritionist etc.,

I'm totally blanking on what to eat! I keep thinking to just go for the healthy option, but fruit is no good right? I know that every processes stuff differently so that what works for one may cause high blood sugar in another, but what the hay.

What did you eat today? Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks?
