A cold scold is not the best approach. Many other ways to communicate this message. The people doing it probably won't listen to something like that.
I don't consciously do or not do it. I don't think I have but maybe I have for some odd reason. If I saw a sign like that I would think that the admin was rude, condescending and unprofessional. If they can't find another way to communicate with their audience in a respectful way (or find someone on their staff who does) then they aren't getting my vote of trust.

Absolutely not. I don't even bring my phone in. I'm busy greeting my daughter, getting her stuff, etc. We make it a point though to not use screens around her and she doesn't get screen time.

It seems to be general consensus that it shouldn't be a thing to be on your phone at school pick up. I mean logistically and common courtesy. The people who don't think so or understand that probably need something like this to get the message across. I am 100% fine with it! Of course, we walk to school and about 70% of the time I don't even bring my phone with me. It would drive me crazy to see people on the phone when they are picking up their kids!

Hopefully its something that there were some serious repeat offenders that were really just offensive about it.

@ElbieKay: <3 <3 exactly.

I NEVER see any parent on their phone during drop off/pick up. yo usally have a billiion things in your hands (jackets, artwork projects, paperwork from daycare) to even worry about it.

but seriously this sign is obnoxious, if i am paying daycare to take care of my babies, i expect tact when delivering messages not trashy attention seeking dialogue. this would really rub me the wrong way as a their client and i would complain about how rude it is.

I've never been on my phone when I'm dropping off or picking up from day care. In fact, my husband called as I was getting the kids out of the car to drop off, and I was so annoyed that he even called when he knew what I was doing.

Then again, I haven't ever seen anyone in our day care be on the phone during pick up or drop off. Usually parents stay outside of the day care and finish their call, then go inside to get the kiddos.

I am on my phone too much too, but can't even really consider using my phone at dropoff because I don't have an extra hand available to hold it.

But you know what? I am a working mom that runs a client-facing team of 25 people and generally manages to squeeze what should be a 50-hr/week job into 40 hours so I can spend more time at home with my son. One reason I can get away with this is because I can be available electronically. And one way that I manage to juggle household management with everything else is by leveraging electronic transactions.

So am I sometimes blowing off steam by reading social media or other trashy internet? Sure. But often the reason I am glued to my phone is because it is a critical part of my life juggle.

Regardless of how important my job is/isn't in the grand scheme of things, my family depends on my income and my coworkers depend on my availability. And it is important to me that I maintain my ability to support myself.

If people want to waste their energy judging me for that, then I think it's a shame they can't find something more important to do.

@Jackiedavis87: I, too, am not surprised by the wording. Seems pretty typical around here. But I do find the wording and punctuation less than professional and it annoys me. Mostly just because I can be kind of judgmental and jerky about those things lol

@Jackiedavis87: oh really? That sign is definitely a case of local customs at play.

Based on the way another situation was handled I think my daycare would have addressed the "offenders" personally and then followed up with a general reminder email or FB post. Honestly though to your point @Purpledaisy: how do you even broach this one on one since it's a parenting choice. I like the cell-free zone idea. Give me a rule and I will follow.

@ShootingStar: @psw27: totally my reaction--this is a thing?? I've never seen it and it wouldn't occur to me that it would be acceptable--maybe the same people who won't get off their phone when they're ordering coffee, etc? even that I don't ever see IRL.

as a customer/client I'm not bothered by the chiding wording; sounds like it was necessary and guessing they were exasperated, maybe by already having been ignored. plus where I live people are used to hostile treatment by local businesses.

And if they really want to share their expertise put it in a newsletter, on their blog, etc., sans the judgy sanctimonious tone which doesn't help anyone.

ETA I usually have my phone with me but aside from checking the date or time I don't use it. I don't think I've even sent a text except when dd was going potty.

@AggieDaze: How I see it is that you are paying the daycare to watch your kid, not to get parenting advice. If you're choosing to be on your phone, that's your choice.

For me personally, I am not on my phone during preschool dropoff/pickup and I don't see other parent on their phones unless they're early and waiting for the kids to be dismissed. But I also usually have my 7.5 month old with me too so it's not like I have a free hand anyways :silly: .

I detest passive aggressiveness. Their staff obviosuly noticed this behavior, from the tone of the note, it happens often. It would have been more appropriate to send home a memo followed up by a general talk. They could have implemented a "no cellphone rule" at pick-up and drop-off. Posting this type of message is innaproriate for a business - they are asking for contraversy.

Having said that, none of the parents at our daycare (myself included) have their phones out.

@Purpledaisy: I mean technically it is their business since they are the caretaker of the child 8+ hours per day and seeing the fallout of a child devastated by their parent ignoring them.

Also, if a parent is on the phone while walking their kid out (thru a parking lot), that isn't safe. And finally, I'd bet money that same parent would be on the phone while backing up and driving in the parking lot (thus putting other kids in danger).

I highly doubt a daycare would post a sign like this unless it was a frequent issue or one that was so obviously terrible that it needed to be dealt with.

On one hand I think the tone of the sign is totally unprofessional for a business to post.

On the other hand, picking my daughter up at daycare is the highlight of my freaking day. Dropping her off is the last sweet minutes I get with her until then. I never bring my phone into daycare. I feel sad for the parents and kids that this sign applies to.

I live in the area where this daycare is located, and IMO it is in no way harsh for this area lol. This sign is not even the most "smartass" I've seen posted on a door. I have no doubt that those workers have asked people multiple times to get off the phone. In rural Texas that's just how we talk to each other. I'm dead serious.

DS1 is soooo stinking excited to see us that he sprints over for a big hug while yelling and often wants to be carried out to the car. So we always take two trips - to get his stuff moved to the car first and THEN to get him from his classroom. I couldn't look at my phone if I wanted to!

Is this a thing? I've legit never seen a parent on their cell phone at daycare. There is no chance I could wrangle DS into his coat, mittens, hat and the stroller while on the phone. Plus, he's so excited to see us when we pick him up - that would be so horrible to miss out on the excitement while on the phone.

The sign is a bit much, but I get the sentiment. I like to look at my phone too but my son says "put it down" (he's only 2) when I pick up my phone these days! He is a great reminder to stay in the moment with him.

If this was an issue, our preschool would just a group email that was very nicely worded. I've never seen any parents on their phone though.

I've never seen any parent on their phone at daycare, usually everyone's busy getting their kids in or out. I normally leave my phone in the car too. But if I were to be on my phone it's either because something urgent is happening at work or DH is trying to tell me something important. I would not appreciate a business that I am employing to being so rude.

I am totally fine with this message. Some parents just drive me crazy with their behavior. Of course I am not talking about the occasional phone call I am talking about the repeat offenders.

I am not even joking that these two things have happened in the last two weeks:

1) I watched a dad, 3 days in a row (apparently we were on the same schedule those 3 days) walk up to the main door (which enters you into the "foyer" - theres another door to get in to the center but it is not locked/coded) opened it, and basically ushered his son in - then turned and walked away, all the while on his cell phone.

2) a Mom who always picks up which talking on her phone, usually puts it to the side when she greets her son, out to the car and proceeded to drive through the parking lot staring at her phone - and not slowly.

I notified the director about both. I have zero tolerance for the woman staring at her phone in the parking lot where children are ALWAYS a risk. And the dad who opens the door and shoves his son in...ugh - I mean I get it, things come up, but three days in a row?! Take 5 minutes to walk your child to their classroom.
