Yeah im with @banana, i've had a clogged duct after going too long between pumping sessions and it was not pleasant, not to mention i am terrified of mastitis. I always wake up at 2:30am to pump bc it's painful if i dont!

I would be careful of getting clogged ducts/mastitis though. :( The first time my son slept through the night (6 hours), I woke up with clogged ducts which turned to mastitis. So I decided I would wake up in the middle of the night to pump, even if he slept through the night!

I still pump at 2 or 3 am every morning at almost 7 months post partum. I definitely don't need to but I can't get myself to stop...I stopped using supplements so I will donate any extra milk to a milk bank!

I would say sleep through it. I find when I skip a pumping session, I pump as much as I would have in two sessions the next time I pump. It doesn't always happen overnight but it definitely happens if I skip during the day (like if we're out somewhere and I can't pump).

@winniebee: As long as you are making enough, I agree you should sleep. It will also help regulate your supply (the ultimate goal is just as much as they need right).

You are doing a gerat job!

@winniebee: How long did it take you to establish your supply? LO is 4 weeks today and I am waking up every 3ish hours to pump which is a pain! Daily I end up pumping 45oz and LO drinks about 24oz, however i am afraid if i go longer periods between pumping that my supply will decrease. I'm trying to stash as much as possible before i start work again. Any advice?

Exclusive pumpers.......

DS has FINALLY started sleeping for longer stretches (4.5, 5, or 6 hours followed by a shorter sleep stretch). I pump whenever I get up with him at night, but never wake up just to pump. So, last night he slept about 6.5 hours so I went about 7 hours between pumps! I pump far more than he can drink (I freeze about 15 oz a day...he drinks about 23). And, he's 9.5 wks so I figure my supply won't take a huge hit from going longer between pumps at night. I can't bear to deprive myself of blessed sleep! I figure that BF moms don't wake their babies up to feed when their babies start sleeping longer stretches, so why should I?

Do you wake up to pump? Why?
