This is SO important thank you for posting! I have had hypothyroidism for years, but it wasn't caught until recently by my Reproductive Endocrinologist. She had my levels under control before I went through IVF.

It is also important to know that if you do have an issue with your thyroid that is controlled by medication, you may need to have medication adjustments as soon as you become pregnant. Getting pregnant immediately knocked my thyroid levels out of whack. I was surprised about how quickly it did this, but so fortunate my doctor caught it early!

Amen! Also, I'd add that Hashimoto's is important to get checked out for (thyroid killing antibodies). I read somewhere that something like 90% of Hypothyroidism is Hashi's.

I've struggled with thyroid issues for 12+ years. I just found out yesterday that it's stopped working completely and I will possibly need a thyroidectomy.
Thanks for bringing awareness!

Thanks for this info! My husband has thyroid issues and takes medication daily for it. We didn't have any issues when I was pregnant with DD but now this makes me nervous for getting pregnant with another LO. I wonder if I should ask my OB.

@MamaPhoenix: Thanks for this! Interestingly enough pregnant women in New Zealand are now being advised to take an iodine supplement as we have very low iodine levels in our soil which is causing a rise in Goitre.

http://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/preventative-health-wellness/nutrition/iodine

So I know I've become a bit of an advocate for thyroid around here lately. I Just really want to make sure I've done my part to help someone else who might be going through the same thing.
My total thyroidectomy is this friday, so I've got it on my mind quit a bit lately.
Why this all relates to HB?
Because I was diagnosed the same time I found out I was pregnant with our LO. If I had not asked for the extra blood work baby Phoenix would have never took her first breaths.
That's how serious this is. Please take the time to read this and if you or someone you know is having any of the symptoms please get help asap if your pregnant.
According to the American Thyroid Association.
-12% Of the US population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime
-An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease.
-Of those 20 million up to 60% are unaware they have the disease.
-Women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to have thyroid problems
-One in 8 women will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime.
-Undiagnosed thyroid disease may put you at risk for certain serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, Osteoporosis and INFERTILITY!
-Pregnant women with undiagnosed or inadequately treated hypo/hyperthyroidism have an increased risk of Miscarriage or preterm delivery.

Signs of Hyperthyroid
-Anxiety and irritability
-A fine tremor of your hands
- Heat sensitivity and an increase in perspiration or warm moist skin.
-weight loss despite normal eating habits
-Change in Menstrual cycle
-Frequent Bowl movements
-Thickening and reddening of the skin
-Rapid or irregular heart beats/palpitations.
-Fine dry brittle hair
-Hair loss (in clumps)
-Bulging of the eyes
-Light sensitivity
-Double vision
-Muscle weakness
-Skin itch ( over all body that nothing can relieve)
-Extreme Fatigue (cannot get out of bed)

Most Women that get diagnosed with thyroid disease do so around the same time as or after a pregnancy.
Your bodies TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) has a very similar genetic make up of the HSG Hormone created in Pregnancy. When the HSG travels throughout the body and passes with your blood through your thyroid it can trigger the thyroid. By triggering it, the thyroid will begin producing extra TSH and begin attacking itself suppressing the immune system.

Because the thyroid is Hormone related any time your levels are off it can affect your fertility. Most Doc's do a certain blood test for thyroid and will come back with the answer that it looks good. When in reality they haven't gone as far as they need to go. When getting thyroid testing it is important to make sure they are testing TSH, T3 and T4. This is the only way to receive accurate results. It could save you a lot of headaches down the road.
They have not determine the exact reason behind why we end up with thyroid disease. It is very possibly it's genetic and environmental. Halogens placed in our drinking water such as chlorine and florine have been found to interfere with our ability to absorb the right amounts of Iodine our thyroids need to perform at ultimate levels. Since we personally can't control what's being put in our drinking water we have to combat these halogens with our diets.
Foods that naturally contain Iodine our thyroid needs to function are
-All food out of the ocean
-Radishes
-Asparagus
-Carrots
-Tomatoes
-Spinach
-Rhubarb
-Potatoes
-Peas
-Strawberries
-Mushrooms
-Lettuce
-Bananas
-Cabbage
-Onions
-Egg Yolk
-Cod-liver oil
-Kelp
and seaweed.

That's all I got for now. I do plan on updating after my surgery so that if anyone ever has to take the same treatment plan they will know what to expect. As my journey continues I look forward the most to getting better and being able to plan for LO #2 to join our family one day.
Please always trust your instincts and your body. It never lies.
Happy Healthy Thyroid to all!!!!!!
