@paigeface awesome. My 16 month old went to sleep at 6:30 which was too late for him, he was falling apart by 5:15. We're all aboard the early bedtime train!

Thank you all so much for your responses! Our Lo went down at 11;30 today and only made it an hour but yesterday went down for an 1.5 hours so that's good to me so far. Like many of you mentioned it's a work in progress! Tonight I took @sweetiepie advice and put him down at 5:15 tonight right after his dinner/bath. He was SO ready and went right down. He is sleeping away as I type this. Thank you all 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

@pwnstar: LIFE. CHANGING. When I started taking the sleep professionals advice to a T we had such a drastic improvement in everyone's quality of life.
Anyway, slight departure from the topic but hopefully it's helpful to someone.

@pwnstar: @MrsADS: 🙌🏼 People are so afraid of the super early bedtime because they think 1) it will cause super early morning wake up or 2) they are losing time with their LOs.
To respond to those concerns:
1) I know SO MANY MOMS in my real life moms group who did super early bedtimes and actually had LATER morning wake times. Myself included! Sleep begets sleep is (usually) so true!
2) a wise woman once told me to think of time with the LOs as quality vs quantity. If that time stretching them at the end of the day means an angry fussy cranky kid, no one enjoys that time anyway. So just put them to bed early and make it up other times when they'll be happy and you can enjoy it (morning or weekend). And go ahead and enjoy the extra time to yourselves as a result of the early bedtime. That has been some of the best advice I've received.

I know you both agree :-) so just giving a virtual high-five.

@SweetiePie: @MrsADS: My oldest had a 6:00-6:30 bedtime for the longest time! It was such a struggle to do dinner/bath/bed after work/daycare pickup, but it was so important to make sure LO got as much sleep as possible.

I kept the morning nap short ( 1 hr max, I think) and gradually moved it later and later. As it got later, I made it even shorter. Eventually, the morning nap started at 11 and it wasn't that crazy to move to 1 nap only at 12.

We transitioned at 15 months and 12:30 would be too late. DD1 woke up between 6-7 and for the first month or so needed to go down by 11-11:30. It was awkward, but slowly she was able to stretch it out longer. At first we did lunch after nap, and then waited till she could stretch out to noon to do an early lunch. It was a little painful in the beginning b/c she would needed to be in bed by like 7-7:30 so we were always rushing, but it didn't last forever!

My 16 month old wakes up early (6am) and he's always asleep by 11 or 11:30. Some days it is a stretch to keep him up that long! He could not make it til 12:30. That bring said, even with a 2 hour nap he's usually a mess by 5:30. I think the longer awake times are still tough for him, but he won't take 2 naps anymore.

We have been on one nap since around 13 months old, and DS still goes down around 11am (after waking between 6 and 7am) now that he's 16 months old. He prefers a shorter awake time in the morning and longer in the evening, and goes to bed at 7pm after a 1:30 to 2 hour nap. At first I had to put him down for one nap around 10 or 10:30 and I did have a cranky baby in the afternoon but it didn't last long until I was able to stretch him to stay awake until 11 and just have the one nap.

@paigeface: there are two ways you can go. Early bedtime or you can keep the morning nap limited to 45 mins (wake him) and then do a nap a few hours later IF you think he'll do it...then a bedtime that's later than your 6:15 but still reasonable for his age - say 7/7:15. It al depends on how much time he can spend awake before getting overtired. Mine is over 2 and to this day he still can't do more than 4.5 hours in the afternoon (he does about 5.5 hours in the morning). Mine did take a 2nd nap for the most part and I just kept pushing that morning nap till it was at a reasonable time that we could do bedtime without him being overtired.
I have a couple of friends who worked with sleep consultants and they said it's super common for LOs to have a crazy early bedtime during the transition to 1 nap. One actually called it "crazy stupid early bedtime". It's that whole "1 isn't enough but 2 is too many" thing. They can't make it the whole way to normal bedtime after a late morning nap, but they also can't do a 2nd nap with a reasonable bedtime! That's why it's so tricky.
The consultants said you have way better success doing an early bedtime (like 5:30) vs letting them get super overtired and doing normal bedtime. We did do 5:30 bedtime for a while and he did fine. But I've always had a kid who is super sensitive to overtiredness and loves sleep. The positive is that it's pretty dark by 5pm (or getting dark) so it shouldn't be TOO hard to get him down.
This transition is so hard! It's a lot of trial and error and constant adjustment as the nap gets pushed.

My LO is just 15 months old and the last 3/4 weeks we've pretty successfully gotten him down to one long afternoon nap. Some mornings he's still really tired so will do a quick nap in the car or something, but we try to keep him up until about 1/1:30 for a 2-3 hour afternoon nap. He also wakes up around 6:30/7 so sometimes it's tough getting him to 1!

@paigeface: When we first did 1 nap we had to put my DD down at 11:30am for her nap and were eventually able to push it back to 12:30pm. We did a small meal/snack at 11am and then "lunch" when she woke up at 1:30 or 2pm. Switching to 1 nap is the longest and most challenging transition

@SweetiePie: Yes, makes perfect sense! I'll try moving and adjusting the lunch up earlier and then putting him down at 11:30. What if he only stays down for the 1 hour to 1.5 hours, did you put him back down later or just move up bed time instead? His bedtime is currently 6:15pm

@pwnstar: ditto
The transition to one nap is rarely going to happen "cold turkey". Usually it's a long process of pushing the morning and afternoon nap later little by little (and maybe cutting them short) until the morning nap gets late enough that you can do just that nap plus an early bedtime. And then eventually it settles into that nice 12/12:30/1pm nap time.
And for a long time it'll feel like 2 naps is too many but 1 nap isn't enough.

Also be aware that when you do get down to one nap they still might be shorter for a little while since they are still feeling like it's their first morning nap. Does that make sense? My son took two 1.5 hour naps and when we finally got to a single nap, t was still 1.5 hours for a little while until he fully adjusted and consolidated his old 2 naps into one longer nap of 2.5-3 hours. Hope that makes sense.

5.5 hours is a long awake stretch for a 16 month old (who is used to taking 2 naps). I would try moving lunch up to 11 and nap at 11:30. The short nap may be due to his being overtired.

I hope you are all having a wonderful New Year so far!

So I've been trying to get our LO to take just one nap a day instead of one in the morning/one in the afternoon. It seems like he's ready based on his cues. I've tried to keep him up from the time he gets up in the AM which is 6:45-7:00am until after lunch which is 12:30. He will go down but he will only nap for 45 mins! I always think he is so tired and will nap for two hours. Then he gets so crabby by 2:00 and I get nothing done. Doing the two naps a day have become exhausting. The first nap around 10:00 when we get to work he sleeps for an hour and a half and the second around 2 when he gets really crabby he fights to go down which makes me think he's ready for just one. What did you all do during this transition?
