We have an 8.5 year old female black lab. She's such a love but had some minor issues with adjusting to DS when he was born and has only really recently warmed up to him (he's 22 months). She was a rescue though, so I knew we might have some difficulties when he was born. I can't imagine ever not having her with us, so I assume we will probably always have a lab.

DS is 11 months, but he's always loved dogs!! Whenever he sees one, he lights up and gets so excited. He's not always gentle with them (grabs their tail, pulls on their legs), but we remove his hands and tell him "gentle!" and show him how to pet instead. He's also always crawling after them if they move away from him.

My mom "adopted" our dog when my brother started college. If it wasn't for house training, we would have bought another dog already. We just don't have the time right now to house train since we both work 45 minutes away from home. It's still a thing we want to do one day though!

Our first dog was a jack russell. Second dog was a lab (love him, but all that shedding was intense. Even more than the jack russell). Our third dog was a half yorkie and half pomeranian. She didn't shed!! It was awesome!

I LOVED animals since I was little and wanted a dog since the day I knew what they were (and I was serious too... I was bitten by a dog when I was young & it didn't deter me!). My mom knew though she would have to take care of it and she didn't want to, so she was pretty stern about that. Over the years I did have fish, turtles, birds & a rabbit. She said no dog till I could afford one and take care of one, so after I graduated college I got one!

This wouldn't be an issue with us though since we already have a dog and plan to always have one.

@bluestriped bee: my parents have a cocker spaniel, pure bred. Sweet dog! He is so naughty though lol but I know that's because my parents never trained him or did obedience classes. I know they can be really great dogs. Anyway - he is sweet and I do love him. He's been good with the grandkids too - not playful with them, but tolerant.

Before we got our two dogs, we have our favorite breeds which are:
Me: pug, cocker spaniel, beagle, bishon frise (sp?)
DH: golden retriever, husky, pug,

We got both of our dogs from a shelter and would go that route if we got another dog.
We have a shar-pei mix and a cocker spaniel. Finding the cocker spaniel in our local shelter was a rare find and we think it was meant to be.

@MrsKMM: Awe! What a sweetie!

We have a yellow lab and a toy fox terrier. Our yellow lab is an angel with J. Seriously. He chases her around, hits her with toys, literally rides on her back. She's never once snapped at him. We watch them very closely (we have a close friend who had an awful experience with a dog bite from a dog we'd never expect it from). Our terrier is only 10lbs and he's over 10 years old so he's less fun but he loves it when J pets him.

We have a black lab and I love him to pieces! He's truly a gentle giant. We got him as a puppy and lived on the third floor of an apartment, so potty training was kind of a nightmare, but we got the swing of it and he never has accidents. We are in the opposite scenario as you, though. We have a dog but no kids, yet. Our dog is our furchild and I can't wait for him to be a big brother someday :) labs have such a great temperament, IMO. It might be a fun way to help LO take on some responsibilities? (Help you scoop dog's food, help throw its toys...)

We have a dog now that LO just loves to pieces. Forget Mommy or Daddy, she wants to play with/love on the dog.

I can't imagine us without a dog, though I also can't imagine us setting out to "find" one, much less buy one. I feel like once our dog is gone, another one will find its way to us since that is just how we roll  . Ideally, a shed-free dog would fall into our laps, but in reality, it will probably be a large, hairy, shedding dog.

@MrsBrewer: aww! so sweet. I love labs.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: yeah the space for us too. A small day would do well in our small apartment, but I prefer a larger dog. They tend to be less yippy - of course depending on the breed. But they are also more expensive to feed and need a lot more exercise! And like you - I just don't have the time to devote to a pup. J want's to name his, "Bobi's doggy" (he calls himself Bobi lol!). I told DH we'll revisit this once I graduate college... three years!!

@Mrs. Pen: Chloe wants a dog, too! She watches all the neighbors walk by with their dogs and yells out the window. She wants a dog named Puppy, and asks every night to go for a walk in case we see Jake, Sascha or Rory (neighbors dogs!)

To answer WHEN, we've considered getting her a fish. We don't really have a space for a tank, and having two cats stops us from getting a beta in a fish bowl.

If we had a larger house, we'd get a dog now. Space prohibits us, but we also travel a lot. Dogs require so much more work than our two kitties!

@Leialou: that's funny and so upsetting as well!! Biliverdin needs to be processed in the liver into bilirubin (as we know that an excess of bilirubin causes jaundice - a yellow color). So it sounds like what happened was a liver abnormality that wasn't working correctly. So sad :(

I think a puppy play date sounds like a blast! You could also take him to watch dogs at the dog park (if it is fenced of course! ) It's hard to say the best breed because there are so many. I have two dogs...also a Yorkie and a pound puppy. Pound puppies are great! Here she is in a pillow fort of sorts right now.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I hateeeee dachshunds, totally with you on the biting - unfortunately my DH's dog became my IL's dog once we had kids because that was an already existing issue that got way worse.

I don't want to get another dog anytime soon, even if it weren't got the unfortunate problem of having to get rid of ours (although he never really felt like ours since he was around before me and always hated me - although now that he lives with my ILs and doesn't have me trying to train him anymore he suddenly likes me) I would want to wait until the kids are past the toddler years and I know I really have the time to properly care for a dog. I'd like to go the shelter route and would probably get a lab mix. We had a yellow lab/cocker spaniel mix for 17 years when I was growing up, and she was amazing!

@twodoghouse: yeah, my parents have two dogs that he loves :) they're not big on little kids though. We live on a park and he meets lots of dogs that way too and just gets giddy every time. It's so super cute. Maybe when he is a little older, we could volunteer at a dog shelter - I bet he'd love that.

I really love all dogs of all shapes and sizes (though I'm partial to big dogs). We have an Australian Shepherd and used to have an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie. Such incredibly smart, loving, loyal dogs. It's hard for me to imagine our life without an Aussie in it!

@Ginabean3: My parents have two dogs and he adores them (though they're not terribly friendly with toddlers who chase them lol) so for now, he's content (even though he asks for one every day).

I know that my criteria for getting a dog is definitely being in a house with a yard, and hopefully wood floors! Dog hair in carpet is definitely no bueno!
