Honestly, I wouldn't be able to go 2 months without a dog in my life. Let alone a couple of years.

I would adopt a slightly older (aka past housebreaking, training, etc stage) dog that has been kid tested. Many shelters do this now (so they know if the dogs get along with other dogs or with cats, or with kids, etc). And you could take your LO to meet him/her before adopting to make sure that the two of them get along fine.

I'm sorry for your loss :( As tough as it is I think I would wait until the kids are older before getting another dog. It would be awful to bring one home only to find that it's too much work or not a good fit for 2 under 2.

@Mrs. Sunshine: That's true. At that point, it can be a family decision, deciding which puppy/dog to get! I agree with all pp who said that puppy + toddler + infant (while not impossible), sounds like a pretty rough situation.

Sorry to hear about your furbaby. In your situation with 2 under 2, I would not get a puppy at this time. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, I have one myself. Even though my dog is 12 yrs old, with the dog and my almost 9 mos old, I already feel it is a lot to manage. I do feel bad because a majority of my attention goes to my LO.

I would wait until my kids are older. IMHO.

I'm so sorry you lost your little hotdog!

It's been over a year without my Jacjack, and hubby is still vetoing another dog. Grandad has 5, and we still have Grunt, a beagle, but none of them cuddle.

I would agree that a puppy might be a bit much with two children, but then again I'm stubborn, so if I really wanted a puppy instead of rescuing a dog, I'd go for it pretty much regardless of what people said. I'm sure you're up for the challenge if you've already mentioned it.

Rescuing a dog has it's perks though. Jackjack was an amazing dog- 8 or 9 when we got him, and lived another 9 years. It might be easier to find a dog that already enjoys and is gentle with children than a puppy? I'm not sure though.

I adore my dog, but most days I want to rehome him because I just don't have the time for him. I'm pregnant and and pain and the poor guy is so neglected despite my best efforts to spend time with him (he's still much loved and played with by my 2.5 year old!) I would wait for life to settle down a little.

You'd have to act fast if you want to adopt a new dog; in this case at least 1+, trained and cleared w/ the agency that they're good with kids! That way you have some time to acclimate him/her into your home and train on your won before #2 arrives.

Otherwise you'd probably need to wait a couple of years!

@FliegepilzHut: my MIL (who live across the street) has a dog but she doesn't let LO touch her, same with my parents dog. It will be better when she's older though because then the dog can truly be a gift & she will be excited that we got her a dog!

@FliegepilzHut: we had a long haired dachshund which aren't notorious for being good with kids but she was so wonderful. She would let DD hug her & check her whiskers out & everything.

I guess the more I discuss it the more I realize that we may not get so lucky with another dog, especially if we adopt an older one & should probably wait :/

I think you should completely get a new puppy. I just love animals and would get a new one. I think though that you will be more overwhelmed once you have LO2 and would likely be a while before you decide to get another one.

I would rescue a middle aged dog (4 or 5)! I think dogs, like kids, usually have more energy (and thus more needs / propensity towards destruction) until they reach about age 2 or 3. I feel like adding a dog to the mix would be the equivalent of having 3 under 2.

If you do adopt, though, make sure that the dog is child and baby friendly. It doesn't have to be Nana from Peter Pan, but at least tolerable to toddler antics and baby cries.

We had to put our precious, perfect fur baby down about 2 months ago. I really really miss her a lot & just feel sad in general about not having a sweet little fuzzy to love. I think DH would let me get a new dog but here's the thing; come April we will have 2 under 2 so I feel like a puppy would not only add to an already heavy work load but puppies are unintentionally rough & I don't want it accidentally hurting my babies. But with a toddler I'm wary of adopting a dog. My LO is so so sweet, loving & gentle with animals (another reason I want another dog, I want cultivate her love of animals) but she is still a toddler & I don't want to put the new dog in any situation that would make it uncomfortable or unhappy.

What would you do? Should we get a new dog or wait until the kids are older? If we got one now do you think we could have the puppy trained by April or should we adopt? I just can't decide but I just want so much to love & care for another dog!
