It was so easy - they asked in the hospital if I had my pump yet, I said no, and they sent DH to another part of the hospital with my insurance card to pick one up! Different hospital this time around, so we'll see...I guess I should call and find out.

@locavore_mama: I called my insurance and they told me I could purchase whatever I wanted up to a certain dollar amount ($790 I believe, pretty high!) from any retail store and they would reimburse me after I sent the receipt. I bought a medela from Target and was reimbursed about 3 weeks later.

All we had to do was call the insurance company the morning after T was born and they overnighted it. No payments or reimbursements. It was waiting on the porch when we brought him home from the hospital. It's a Medela PISA.

@cheesehead: when I had my first there was no such thing as a free breast pump. ;) Happy to take advantage of it this time around since I think my Ameda was dying towards the end.

@Cupcake: someone else suggested edgepark too. Just checked it out but they don't have the freestyle either. Looks like National Rehab is offering the same pumps as my local place.

You ladies are all so lucky! When I called for my first pregnancy I was told they provided a single manual pump.... seriously? ! Hopefully they have changed their tune this time around, but I'm not holding my breath since it was only last March that I had my son.
@locavore_mama: But I ended up buying the Medela PISA and EP'd. It worked fantastic. So hopefully you have the same luck!

take this for what it's worth, but the last time I was pregs (May '13) my insurance told me the same thing about a local DME provider, but I was able to order mine through edgepark, no questions asked. After reading this thread, I decided to look into it again, through the Medela site, as last time edgepark was out of Medelas, so I had to get an Ameda. I'm not due till January, and National Rehab actually took all my info, and are going to email me back and let me know exactly what I'm eligible for, as my insurance company keeps giving me different answers. These companies make it really easy and pretty much do all the work for you! If I were you I would just do the online chats and let them do the work for you!

Thanks ladies. Just talked to my insurance again and my only option is to get it from a approved local medical supply store.

I guess Medela PISA it is!

I called my insurance co and got a list of suppliers. The insurance would have given me a pump before LO was born, but they required a prescription and my midwife wouldn't write it until LO got here. So I waited and got the prescription in the hospital, which required talking to a couple different people (the first one I asked refused to give me the prescription but I was persistent). Then I called one of the suppliers on my list, gave them my insurance info, and picked up my pump a couple days later. They would have shipped but I live really close by so I just drove to get it. They didn't give me any choices, but I ended up with a PISA, which has worked out pretty well for me. I have not tried the Freestyle so I can't compare.

Our insurance provides pumps through this site.

I downloaded a form from the site, filled out my part, had my OB fill out her part, and then faxed it in. Then the medical supply place called me to hammer out the details.

I should have my pump by this Friday. Super-easy.

@locavore_mama: Just the PISA, I really like it. (As much as you can like a pump. So over pumping. Only a few more months!). But I would like the freedom of not being chained to an outlet while pumping. Ideally, for the next baby I will leave my PISA at the office and use the Freestyle at home when I need to move around more.

I just spoke with my doctor about this today! I have to have my doctor write a prescription for the pump no sooner than 30 days before my due date. Then I have a list of 3 places I can call and place the order through, and it'll be delivered to my house.

I had a similar situation. The insurance company told me there was no limit on the pump I could get. As long as it was from an in-plan medical supply store. But when I talked to the medical supply store they said only the Ameda Purely Yours was covered. After spending *way* too much time on the phone with both the insurance company and multiple medical suppliers, I finally was able to pay an extra $50 to get the PISA. Next time I will pay whatever to get the Freestyle.

It was really annoying that the insurance company told me one thing and the suppliers something else.

@locavore_mama: I have United Healthcare and their rules were I could not put in the order until past 4 months pregnant and they will not ship out the pump until your due date or notice that the baby was born (whichever came first). If your insurance has that rule, you can rent a hospital one for a few days - it took 5 days for mine to arrive from shipping to delivery.

I called United and they gave me the 2 medical supply companies and I called both to see what they had in stock and then did a lot of online research and got the Ameda Purely Yours. They went ahead and put in the order and since I went past my due date went ahead and shipped it. A lot of steps, but overall they make the process easy; hope it's the same for you!

I called my insurance, and they gave me a list of places. Some medical supply stores, and some "certified providers" or so etching like that- people connected with lactation resources. I ended up calling a few places until I found one with a freestyle in stock. I drove to some lady's house to pick it up and she billed my insurance directly.
It was weird, and also the easiest thing ever. Also, I was 10 months postpartum when I got it! I was amazed

My insurance had a link on their website with a list of places I could order my pump from, and I was able to do everything online or over the phone. It did have to be from an approved Durable Medical Equipment Provider. Most of the approved providers had lists of what pumps they carried. For my particular plan and the particular provider i ordered from, I could get the basic Medela double electric (same as the PISA but with a more basic bag, basically) for free, a PISA for an extra $50, I think, or a Freestye for an extra $100. Since I was SAH I got the free basic.

Most places are more on the ball with it now that it's been covered by insurance for a while. I started calling in Jan. 2013 and no one knew what they were talking about.

so we had to go thru a medical supply company too, but since dd came so early we hadn't made arrangements yet to get one. we called from the hospital to try and set up to get one and told our insurance that we basically needed it yesterday and they told us we couldn't get anything for about 3 weeks and it wouldn't even be guaranteed that we'd get a double, or even electric, pump. so we ended up buying one and are going to submit the receipt thru the claims department and see if we can get reimbursed some. (i also recently started renting a hospital grade since i am exclusively pumping and needed something stronger. also not covered.) urgh insurance! :bummed:

How did you get one?

Did you go to a local medical supply store and used your insurance card?
Did your insurance send you one?
Were you able to order online then file for reimbursement ?

With mine I think I go to a medical supply store but I'm just finding out that only one local lactation store carries breast pumps and accepts insurance.

They're also telling me only the PISA works with my insurance. At least for them. But I talked to insurance and they said there's not limit on brand or style. I was hoping to get the freestyle.

Is the biggest difference the portability of the freestyle?
