So glad things are better! I skimmed the posts with concern. Can't believe some doctors can be so relaxed with ongoing issues! Hope you and your LO have a great weekend.

Hi @Bao: I think my DS might be going through this for the past week. Did your Dd have stomach pains during this time? Pedi is out of town and receptionist said to go to urgent care but I'm not sure if it's necessary since he's not in any pain but his belly feels a little bit hard or bloated? And we're only on day 3 of no BMs. Thx

@Boogs: it is! I actually got a call back around 5pm today and her doctor wants me to keep doing what I'm doing (Miralax, probiotic, fiber, water) and we will see how it goes. Since LO is doing better I'm not as concerned BUT he's now in my loop with me so if I'm not happy with something I know he will take care of it,

A little update, if anyone cares haha! Called the doctor this week but he wasn't in so I'm just waiting to hear back from the nurse, about what he says. I told the nurse I wanted it to go to her normal doctor since I trust him 110% and he is always proactive about things, and whatever he thinks I will be comfortable with. So just waiting on his words while doing probiotics, small dose of miralax in the morning, tons and tons of fruits and veggies and pushing water. Hopefully I'll hear from him today yet or tomorrow.

I have a 2 year old ( January) She has been on Miralax since she was 2 months old. When we back off of miralax we have the problem again. We do have a gastroenterologist that we see. I was sure we had a problem when she was an infant I suspected she had Hirschsprung disease or was Malrotated. So I pushed to have test done. She was Malrotated and had emergency surgery. Even after the surgery she still required Miralax. The good thing about miralax is that it is not absorbed into the body it just draws water into the colon. She is also on a Gluten Free diet due to Celiac Disease.

We've dealt with similar issues and now have my 4yo on daily miralax. I've just realized that she's going to need that for the foreseeable future. It seems like her acute issues might need more than dietary changes to get over the hump. If it were me I'd probably make an appointment with her regular doc asap and ask for a referral to a pediatric GI.

I think you've gotten a lot of good advice. I just wanted to mention that while we were getting over the initial hump I bought those naked juice smoothies and we would water them down. That was the most helpful way to increase water consumption short term. In the long term we have had to be strict about a gluten free and dairy free diet. That coupled with plenty of fresh fruit and some dried fruit on a regular basis have been working well.

@teawithpaloma: yes and I've talked to him a few times! He's amazing. I just didn't think a year and a half or more we would still have to keep up with it all...it's just becoming, overwhelming? It's mentally exhausting me, because it gets fixed using his methods and she's good and then not after a while. So it obviously works but I guess I just wish she would be better for good and I don't have to do the Miralax for her entire childhood! But that's what makes me suspect (after comments here) it's a bigger issue.

@Bao: I was on my work computer earlier, so I didn't want to post with a ton of detail, but I developed a severe gluten intolerance when I was 20. I got severe constipation and the doctor told me to increase my fiber, which I did through wheat. That made the situation so much worse. I ended up having bowel blockages that required a colonoscopy prep kit to clear.

I testes negative for Celia, but the blood test isn't perfect. A 3 week dietary trial confirmed I was definitely reacting to gluten. The medical profession has come a long way in recognizing gluten issues, but I'm always surprised at how many people react to it.

@looch: no I didn't try today, I spent the morning at the store with her picking out things for her to eat, got a probiotic (can't hurt?) and I had a bunch of other errands so I just got home. Luckily she's comfortable today and I'm going to do all I can this weekend until I call on Monday. @Mrsbells: I have NO idea why she wasn't more educated on this, I was so confused while we were there. But she has good ratings so then I feel like I'm being ridiculous.

@Bao: I would absolutely not do what the doctor said. I would get another opinion. I mean why did the doctor even need to research that?
My personaly suggestion would be to really revamp your childs diet, starting with tons of pears, prunes and prune juice. I used to make prune juice ice pops for my LO who also suffered wth bad constipation and she would love them because she thought they were a treat. In your case you could try blending it into a smoothie maybe? and really cut out white bread, apple sauce and any other major constipation causing foods for now

@junebugsmama: I understand...but our pedi gastro is against them, just passing that along.

I have tried giving my son enemas and it never solved the actual problem. It seems like it did, but the hard stool never came out, just the softer, newer stuff.

@looch: when patients come in for constipation clean out, we often start with an enema. If it's higher up, it might not break up all the blockage but it definitely can help! This is prescribed by gi docs in a children's hospital.

I actually wouldn't do the enema...our pedi gastro advised against it and that it doesn't actually break up the blockage. It just creates cramps in the rectum, which may not release all of the dried stool...this is of course, assuming it's this.
