Seems like we may need to ride it out. What kills me is when he wakes up crying after a 40 minute nap....clearly not tested and overtired but unable to fall back asleep.

I feel your frustration! This was us a few months ago. :/ It was so exhausting, I debated on even posting on this thread out of fear of jinxing us! It started for us around 3 months, and slowly started improving around 4 months. I read every baby sleep book I could get my hands on, but nothing helped. We just rode it out. Hang in there!

Seriously I have no idea. DS has had awful sleep for a week, now the last two nights in a rw he's slept 11 hours straight. I think everything I do is arbitrary so I'm going to try to just relax and go with the flow. His sister eventually figured it out so he probably will too, right?

we also don't see a difference if he naps a lot or not through out the day.
definitely routine(and a little bit of the luck of the draw i think). the one time we didn't give DS his bath it was a 'rough night'(rough for us...) we learned we can't do that again.
i think also tweaking the routine if you think something isn't working. we learned that DH has to put DS to bed. when i do he either doesn't go down or doesn't stay down.

good luck!

I'm really sorry you're going through this!

Our rough patch of sleep was from week 10 to 3.5 months and we never really experienced the 4 month regression that everyone talks about. Nights were just erratic with no consistency and naps were frequent and short and super frustrating.

What I think really helped us was:

1) following strict wake times. At 4 months my LO was up 2 hours between wake up, naps and bedtime. Getting him to fall asleep for naps and bedtime was pretty easy. I ignored his sleepy cues and just watched the clock. We would wind down for naps at 1h50.

2) sticking with 3 naps and no more unless it was a wonky day with car naps and travel and what-not

3) early bedtimes if needed (they always work for us)

4) getting rid of dependencies / sleep crutches. My LO has been able to put himself to sleep from early on but we would give him the pacifier in the middle of the night to see if he was really waking out of hunger. That wake up became habitual so we did one night of sleep training just after 4 months to get rid of it.

We also never saw a correlation between naps and nights. Some days he'd have 5 hours in naps (awesome!) but still wake earlier than he should. We just stayed really consistent with setting time limits for feeds and how we responded to nightwakings.

Hope that helps!

Many of us with 4-5 month olds have been posting up a storm about sleep. Regression, napping problems, etc.

Sleep has been awful in our house off and on for the past month. Multiple night wakings (last night lost track) and naps suck - one long morning nap (but often wakes after 45 mins) and then 45 mins the rest of the day....often 20 mins....or nap refusal. Anyways I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to get back on track? Early bedime worked one night. But I feel like every time naps are ok bedtime sleep sucks and vice versa. Vicious cycle. Tonight DS has already woken up 6 times since 8 pm. He is over tired and I don't know how to fix it.

Help!
