Thanks everyone! I gave them both hair cuts yesterday to see if more even hair would help. I also bought some new pony tail holders and clips and am going to see if that helps.

Great idea about braiding M's hair. I never try because she's such a wiggle worm, but maybe if I plug her in to Mr. Rogers or something.

I love French braids, but I can only do them when hair is damp or wet. I run a detangler through hair before braiding. Could you do little top knots for the girls? YouTube helps a ton!

I find doing French braids with ever so slightly damp hair helps it grip while you braid, and just practice like crazy! you'll definitely get better -- maybe commit to 2 weeks worth of French braids? :D sounds like M's hair would do great in braids :)
great job, mama.

Practice! LO's hair is about halfway down her back. And she doesn't have bangs, but doesn't like her hair in her face, so it's up 95% of the time. French braids, dutch braids, pig tails, twists, half braids. Cute Girl Hairstyles as suggested above has some good ideas.

Fortunately, I can distract LO with a tv show and get her hair done. If she sits still, I can get it done (twin braids) in less than 15 minutes.

I'd love to find a good bun style for her. She has long fine (but lots!) hair, that tends to slip easy.

Ok I am super bad at my own wash and go hair but I stumbled upon this hairstyle with my daughter. I liked it and then when a ballet mom I just met asked me how to do it, I knew it was gold! Step one: you put two ponies, a low and high and then Step two: tuck the low end into the top or the high one until it gets stuck in a little basket. And that's all. One minute or less. I was trying to pull it through to make a flipped fancy pony (not sure the name) but it got stuck in a tucked bun like basket and it looked better. Anyway LO agreed to model-sort of-here she is being silly with her face in the couch. This is all I know so looking forward to hearing/seeing more ideas. :)

@Mrs. Chocolate: I don't have a daughter so no amazing advice here but I do have super fine hair with a bit of wave/body. All hair styles (like curls) slip out very quickly. Pony or pig tails have to be super tight so for your J I'd just recommend clips and bobbypins etc while she is so young.

I'm so ham handed. I just can't make good hairstyles for the girls. Between them wiggling and hating getting their hair brushed and my ineptitude at doing styles, my girls always look a little scraggly.

Any tips on getting better at styling their hair? C often asks for a French braid, but mine often fall out after a short time and aren't even. She has a very challenging and prominent hair swirl at the front of her forehead.

M. has a very challenging hair type too. When wet, it's zig zag curly, but dry it lays straight (but a frizzy straight). She doesn't fit AA hair advice and doesn't fit caucasian hair advice. The only way it looks really cute is with two high pigtails. Otherwise it looks messy.

Please help me get better at hair!
