just wanted to pipe up and say, don't be afraid to just supplement with formula a little bit if you think it could help--i did this a little bit with my first, our issues were more related to latching and supply than pain for me, but it helped bridge the gap until we could get things on track. i was able to get back to exclusively breastfeeding, and possibly even better, supplementing REALLY helped so that i no longer felt trapped--i totally understand feeling that way with the pumping schedule, i felt that way too (i was basically being told to alternate feeding and pumping around the clock and it was TOO MUCH), and i just found it mentally very helpful to know it was an option to fill in a feeding or two with a formula bottle. so glad the pumping has helped a bit and hope you are healing soon!

@Ergggg: Glad you are feeling a little better. I was going to suggest pumping too to give you a break. I had a hard time the first week with my LO and I found pumping for a day or two was the most helpful.

typing w/ 1 hand but wanted to respond! i pumped half the time yesterday and i think it helped me, emotionally. this morning i have less pain so already off to a better start. i have my 6 week checkup tomorrow so ill see what my midwife says. im going to ask about the apno too--ibuprofen helps the most so putting it on directly would be great.

this is so not easy and theres not a clear right answer. i just want to feel better! thanks for all the responses--its so helpful to know and read

Totally feel for you! I was in a similar place, although I think my pain has not been as bad. My daughter fussed at the breastvso much though that feeding her was extremely stressful. I decided to start weaning just last week bc of it. She is 8 weeks and I already feel so much better. I switched to pumping and am weaning from there bc it seemed easier. Once I let go of the guilt and accepted that her being on formula is better for everyone, a huge weight lifted!

Weaning is annoying and time consuming but I have no doubt it will be worth it for me. I don’t know if you’re there yet, but if you are, it’s ok!!

Good luck!

@Ergggg: I had this problem with my DD. Have the cracks become inflamed or oozy at all? I was treated for thrush, which didn't help, and it ended up that they'd gotten infected, like a bacterial infection, and I needed antibiotics. Those helped tremendously. I did also EP for a couple of weeks to let them heal.

Oh man, I sympathize with you. With my first, I had a laundry list of breastfeeding issues that made it SO painful. Like you, I couldn’t heal, and suffered thrush and vasospasms. It was actually a more painful experience overall than labor, I used to say. You are a badass for nursing through all that!

Things that helped me:
All purpose nipple ointment (APNO). It has powdered ibuprofen to help with pain directly where you need it. We had to get it at a compounding pharmacy. Ask LC.
Getting a second opinion. I ended up going to more than one LC and the last one was surprised about an issue that was missed previously.

We eventually overcame our issues and breastfed for two years. But there’s probably no chance I could have devoted that much time and energy on issues with my second child since I was spread so thin.

I wish you the best! Let me know if you have any other questions; it seems like we shared a lot of the same issues.

@Ergggg: Do you have hands-free pumping options, like freemies or a pumping bra? You could pump while feeding baby a bottle from the last pumping session, and that could help with your let down too. But I totally get not getting the schedule right, I tried switching to EP when my son was about 8 months, and ended up going back to nursing and just weaning altogether at 10 1/2 months.

@Sams Mom: I keep thinking i'll take a nursing break and EP then I inevitably mess up the schedule of feeding/pumping and just start nursing again! It's so hard to time everything but also not feel trapped.

I had that issue with my DS - I pumped exclusively for about a week to let my nipples heal and then went back to breast and it was much better!!

Is pumping any easier on you? If it is, you could switch to exclusive pumping. If it isn't there is nothing wrong with weaning and switching to formula. You have to take care of yourself so you can take care of your kids. I hope you start feeling better soon!

I am having the worst time BFing my 2nd LO. He is almost 6 weeks. I had immediate latching issues that created bad cracks and bleeding. My nipples have never healed so I still have severe pains when we first latch on and in between feedings. I have seen a LC multiple times and I'm also now on meds for both thrush and vasospasms to try to get rid of the pains. I've been taking the diflucan and nifediprine (or whatever its called!) for 5 days now and still no relief.

Even yesterday my LC seemed surprised that Im still dealing with the pain and that my nips haven't healed. We have worked on the latch and that all looks good. We did chiropractor and she checks for tongue ties. I'm really just at my wit's end and not sure whether the pain is worth continuing. I had similar issues with my first LO and I hate that everything is deja vu! I weaned him pretty quickly. I thought this time would be better or easier. The pain gets managable when I take the high dosage ibuprofen from after my birth but my doctor doesn't want me relying on that anymore. And, it's just masking the pain!

I guess this is just a complaining post. Not sure what to do next! Thanks for letting me rant!
