@MrsSRS: thanks for checking in, it is going much better. We saw the doc 3 times in the first week and at his last appt felt ok to follow up in a month. He’s doing much better and we’re all very thankful.

@gotkimchi: How is he doing now? I have not taken Lexapro, but I do take Zoloft (my doc actually prefers lexapro, but I felt more comfortable with Zoloft for now due to nursing).

I also scored high on the assessment, particularly anxiety. And my doctor stressed multiple times as she was prescribing the medicine that it can take a few weeks to feel better, and that it's not uncommon to even feel worse at first. But she did tell me to follow up after two weeks if I wasn't feeling better, and sooner if I was notably worse. While that wasn't my experience, your husband is definitely not alone! I hope he starts feeling better asap.

@MamaG: thanks for the time frame. His doctor added buspirone today hoping it would help a little faster to get him through. I guess what’s concerning is he def seems to be doing worse then when he started the lexapro. Hoping we turn a corner soon

I’m on celexa and my DH on lexapro. His lexapro is for anxiety. I would say it took a solid three weeks to see improvement. It was about the same for me on celexa. Those three weeks were hard, i kept wondering how many drugs I would have to go through to feel better and how long that process would take!! Luckily it worked. But the adjustment sucks because you just want to be better already.

Zoloft statted working for me and DH about 4 days in though 2 weeks to trust it consistently. Maybe there was some placebo effect.

Do you qualify to take CARES act family leave? It's 66% pay for 12 weeks if your kids would normally be in daycare or school.

I didn’t feel any relief until I had been on the medicine for 2 weeks. On the Paxil I felt worse because 1) I was still anxious/depressed and 2) now had insomnia. I went off of that before any symptoms were relieved. Once I went on the Prozac, it took about 2 weeks for any relief. I think it was slightly worse because you’re sort of anticipating this magic pill that will make everything better and when that doesn’t happen right away it’s very discouraging. But all of the research says it takes several weeks for anything to happen so I just had to push through and wait. Also know that this may take several tries to get right. It’s all trial and error. This may not be the med for him but unfortunately you have to wait many weeks each time you switch to see what’s working or not. I found my psychiatrists to be so much better than a normal MD when it comes to this stuff.

I also did an intensive outpatient program (I went 5 days/week for several hours for 8ish weeks) at a local psychiatric hospital. It was absolutely life changing and I’d highly recommend some sort of intense therapy like that if you can make it work.

It took me about 2 weeks both times I went on an anti-depressant to start feeling better. It also might take a few tries of different ones to get it right. The first one I was on (Paxil) gave me horrible insomnia and I just felt numb. Then I switched to Prozac which went much better.

My psychiatrist also prescribed me a super low dose of Mirtazapine. At low doses it increases appetite and aids in sleep. It was a miracle medication for me because actually eating/sleeping also helped with the depression and anxiety. There are so many medications and combos out there it unfortunately may take a while to find the one that works.

@DesertDreams88: How long did it take your husband to start acting/feeling better?

My sh started lexapro 10 and Tuesday and actually seems worse. Can’t eat or sleep, just lays around, no motivation. I actually took off work today because I didn’t feel like I could leave the kids with him for 12+hr. We went to two separate urgent cares on Saturday and Sunday because he was so bad and they both said he needs to wait for the medicine to work. We’re going to try to see a pcp today and see if there’s anything they can do and he upped the lexapro to 20mg last night.

@gotkimchi: SO glad you got quick help. If you are experiencing anxiety around this and aren't on any meds yourself may I suggest Valerian? Sometimes supporting a partner is hard. My therapist suggested I use it and it is very helpful in anxious times. Easy to find at CVS/target/amazon

Separately, I hope telemedicine will stick around in some capacity. I know it’s not always indicated, but in times like this when you or I don’t possess an MD degree but know someone needs help ASAP, it such a good thing to have around.

Update for everyone: @winter_wonder: we used the link you recommended and he did a visit this morning. They prescribed him meds and a follow up visit in 1 week. He also scheduled a visit with a psychiatrist on the same device because that is what the md recommended, that’s about a month out.

I’m very thankful for all the advice you given us and happy this was easy to get him help

ETA: he scored a 19 on a health assessment they gave him which she said was “high” and that scored recommended immediate initiation of medicine + therapy

@gotkimchi: agree on urgent care if the telehealth visit doesn’t work today. Maaybe Covid has made psychiatrists more accessible through televisits, but they are notoriously hard to book with. My sister hasn’t seen her actual psychiatrist in years because it’s just impossible to see her—she sees a NP every time now and even the NP is hard to book. My sister is schizophrenic and on some high dosage medications, so you’d think she’s be a priority patient, but she isn’t. Even if my mother calls daily, twice daily, during some emergencies we’ve had, it can be weeks. That’s just our experience (probably varies by geographical area and insurance).

And PCP or urgent care doctors can totally prescribe meds—it might be a good idea to start trying to get an appointment with a psychiatrist now, then start meds with urgent care and keep the appointment with the psychiatrist for later so they can talk about how the meds are working; what adjustments are needed, etc.

@gotkimchi: omg sorry that was super confusing. So many typos. My therapist wanted me to start with my PCP and NOT a psychiatrist. I saw my PCP and she was comfortable prescribing meds to start (and would have referred me to a therapist if I didn’t already have one). My understanding was that if my issues were more complex, or I didn’t respond to the meds, or if things deteriorated, my PCP would have then referred me to a psy.
