@redsmarties: Now, I'm NO expert whatsoever, but at 4 weeks I was going crazy with all these questions and worries about "ruining" her sleep habits... we have done nothing differently, but at almost 7 weeks, suddenly she is sleeping a little longer at night and she NAPS. It takes a long time sometimes to get her down (like nursing her to super drowsy then I still have to bounce her) but once we get her down she takes a nice long snooze. I guess it really is just that she is older? My point it-- I don't think you can set bad habits at this point, and it will get better as she gets older, so just do whatever works for you right now.

Of course I say this now but feel free to laugh at me in 2 weeks when I am frantically posting in the middle of the night how my baby won't sleep :)

@Foodnerd81: smart! We might have to try that tonight with DH's shirt. And yes, we swaddle her for 'bed time'

Thanks for the advice- I'm definitely not rocking her long enough.

Now, she'll sleep for up to 3 hours on us or in our bed, but we've gotten max two hours from her in the pack and play. Any other tips, or will it just take her awhile to get used to it? And should I be putting her in the pack and play for ALL naps now, or just at night?

Guess I don't want to 'ruin' her sleep or get her into bad habits.

I rock E to sleep on her moses basket mattress in my arms and then pop the mattress back into the basket when she's asleep! Sneaky! It works at night but her naps are still crap, little madam!

we normally had to rock and snuggle for 10-20 min before putting him down. we also used the shirt DH had been wearing as a sheet, so it would be warm and smell comforting (but not like food ;) )

I did what you did when dd was that age...rock and sway until asleep before putting her down.

I agree with rocking longer. Is she swaddled? I would that. Abd the lc in my hospital recommended putting a receiving blanket or something like that in your bare skin, like down your shirt or in your waistband, then right before you lay her down, lay the blanket on the mattress, tucking it in so its nice and smooth and tight, and laying her with her head on that so its warm and smells like you. Two person job though.

I have to hold/rock at least 10 mins after she has fallen asleep. If I put her down before she's in a deep sleep she wakes up and I have to start all over! Which is what I'm doing right now.....
It's a long process, keep trying! It's new for K so it might take some time for her to be sleeping on her own. Good luck!

E did the same thing at four weeks. I thought I was going to have to invent some way for me to safely sit up and hold him, because he didn't seem to like when I was horizontal! Honestly, we just kept trying putting him down after his 7 or 8 pm nursing session and lo and behold, one day it worked. We swaddled drowsy but awake and turned on his much beloved mobile. He "chats" for about 10 minutes then falls asleep. I would say that happened regularly around 7 weeks?

@redsmarties: I agree that's way too young for CIO! How long are you holding her before transferring? It takes most babies 20 mins to fall into deep sleep. You could also try elevating one side of newborn napper, putting a horseshoe towel around her to feel snugger, putting sheets in your shirt so they smell like you, putting a warm rice bag down to warm sheet before you put her down.

How long is she asleep before you put her down? Between myself and a mom friend we found 20 minutes of sleepy rocking really helped our boys stay asleep when we transferred. Good luck

K is 4 weeks old today, and we've gotten in the habit of letting her sleep on our chests for naps, and between us in bed at night. While its working, neither DH or I are sleeping soundly because we're worried about something happening.

Tonight we decided to try and get her to sleep in her Pack n Play (newborn napper). I've rocked her to sleep and set her down about 5 times now, and each time she's staying asleep for a little longer (it's been 5 minutes this time).

Any advice to get her to sleep alone? I know she's too little for CIO (not comfy with that yet!). Do I just keep putting her down drowsy/asleep and picking her up when she starts screaming? Any advice would be great!
