@Smurfette: Lol, broccoli makes me want to throw up too  Seriously though, he's way more willing to kiss something than he is to take a bite and we've found a lot of times the kiss will lead to a lick and then a bite! Hope it works for you guys. It's so freaking frustrating when they won't try new things!!

@mediagirl: I don't know what happened. That was only the 2nd time she has ever throw up (the first was about 15 months and she was crying and eating her hand at the same time). But lord that was nasty smelling.

@Smurfette: isn't it great when they make themselves throw up because they think the food is just the grossest thing ever? Ugh.

@petunia354: I might try this. She will not try new things. She has had broccoli well over 20 times but I finally got her to try it two weeks ago and then she threw up all over me.

I don't know if this would work for most families, but the way we do it is we literally never make any type of big deal about food. We just put it in front of us and eat it. She sees us eating it and usually just digs in herself, and then if she doesn't like it, she'll stop. Typing this out makes it sound stupid but it works for us. My LO will try anything really, as long as she sees us eating it.

We start by asking him to kiss the food. Then we might ask for him to lick it. If he does those then we will ask him to try a bite. You need something like 20 experiences with a food before you can determine whether or not you like something. My nephew has been getting OT for feeding for a few years now and these are some of the tactics they had my sister use to get him to try new foods.

@MamaCate: yup, this Daniel Tiger episode is a winner. Now I can usually say, oh what would Daniel say? And she begrudgingly says, try new food, taste good... We also have the you only have to taste it, if you don't like it, that's ok, rule.

It definitely isn't 100% successful but it helps a lot. If she doesn't like something she spits it into my hand (which yes, is gross). And ketchup helps a lot.

@Mama Bird: oh, great point! My lo hates casseroles but if I take everything out of say.... a beef stew....and separate the items, she will eat them. Carrots on one side, meat on the other, rice on another side.

Sometimes it helps to take some for yourself do they see you're enjoying the dish. Some kids also eat better if the ingredients are separate but won't eat them all mixed up... for example my son won't eat veggie salad, but I can often get him to eat tomato and cucumber slices.

My lo is 16 mo and is awesome at trying new foods. She will generally try anything I put on her tray without prompting. She doesn't usually like new things the first few times she has them but keeps trying. I assume she'll get worse at some point :)

I let her dip it in ketchup. Last night she dipped her shrimp in ketchup and ate 6 of them. This, after she took a bite and told me she didn't like them.

Since she turned 3, she has become much more opinionated and tells us that she won't eat a lot of things. We always make her take a bite. We do let her chug her milk after taking the bite if she "hates" it. So, she has the ketchup and milk options to get them down, as needed. :)

Daniel Tiger: "you gotta try new foods because they might taste good!"

I swear we watched this one episode and then sang the song and it majorly decreased the food trying issues! We do the try a bite and after that no pressure approach but the song helps cut down on the negotiation about the bite.

We are pretty firm about trying something once. We always tell her if she doesn't like she can spit it back out. Sometimes she discovers she likes it and others she spits it back out. We just want her to try, she doesn't have to love everything.

The younger one is showing signs of being pickier than my older one. :bummed:

My oldest LO does pretty well about half of the time if I ask her to try something new. I sometimes have to ask a few times to try a no thank you bite and it works well. The other half of the time though she flat out refuses to try, and that's usually on the simple kid friendly looking food! My youngest is a little bit more hesitant as of lately about new things but if I'm lucky I can get her to try something new. It does get a little frustrating when I spend forever making something with ingredients I know they like and then they don't touch it. I guess that's kids for ya though!

How do you get your LO to try new things? Are they pretty good about it?
