I had Paragard. LOVED IT. No hormones, it's the copper one.

Side effects - heavy periods. Other than that nothing else. A dream compared to anything with hormones.

Pain - it hurt to put it in. I had never had kids and they say it does hurt if you don't have kids or if you had a c-section--since your cervix isn't stretched at all. No pain while it was in. Taking it out was like getting a pap..no problem.

No experience with breastfeeding.

I had it out in late July after about 4 years. Doctor told me to wait a cycle before trying so we did. Got pregnant the first month we tried (Sept).

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Nope. She may be thinking about depo. That takes a year + for your body to regulate so you can get pregnant.

Hm, so it seems like people can get pregnant right after getting it out.
A girlfriend of mine was adamant that I not get one because she said it takes your body over a year to adjust once it's out, and can take 1-2 years to get pregnant. Looks like that's not the case!

I'm on Mirena right now, DD is 7 months, I had it put in at 6 weeks PP. It wasn't a big deal being put in, nothing compared to labour! No side effects that I can directly pin on it, my sex drive is low, but that could be from BFins too. No supply issues, I've got plenty of milk.

All in all, I really like it. No muss, no fuss, I don't have to remember anything, still haven't had a period, but I plan on having it taken out around DD's first birthday so we can try for number two.

@MamaBehr: Did you find that you had no issues with the IUD between pregnancies? I am 6 months pp now, and we're looking to probably start TTC for #2 in less than a year. I'm just wondering if it'll affect TTC at all?

I had Mirena for four years. Insertion was painful for me but I haven't given birth yet. Removal was easier than pulling out a tampon. I had no periods for the whole time and had no adverse side effects. I got pregnant in my second cycle TTC, which was five months after removal. Loved having it, and will get it again after LO gets here.

I had a Mirena placed at nine weeks pp. Insertion was no big deal, just a little crampy afterwards. I have had spotting on and off since but it's only been two months so I am giving it time. No impact on breast feeding.

-Which one did you have? I have a Mirena. It was inserted at 6 weeks pp.

-Any side effects? Not really. No bleeding. No cramping. No weight gain. Nothing really noticeable. My period still hasn't come back. Nothing more than a little spotting.

-Did it cause any pain while you had it (or while you were getting it in/taken out)? Nope. It was a quick pinch and then a bit of cramping while she was getting it placed.

-Did you breastfeed while having it? Any supply issues? Nope but my neighbor did. No issues. It's breastfeeding safe.

I would really recommend Mirena. I have had it almost 6 months and I really love it. I have had zero issues.

I had the Mirena inserted at 6 weeks postpartum from having DD. It hardly hurt going in, youst a little pinch, and the only side effect I had was a disappearing period. The removal also didn't hurt, and I got pregnant with DS the second cycle after removal (the first cycle trying).

- I had Mirena after DD 1. It got inserted during a Pap smear... Barely felt anything unusual... OB and I were having small talk the entire time (both for insertion and for taking it out).

-No side effects, except a much, much lighter period... Got lighter the longer I had it... (I had it for about 2 years)

-I wasn't bf'ing while on it, so can't answer that question...

-Got it out in Aug, had withdrawal bleed a few weeks later that month... A real period in Sept... And then pregnant in Oct.

I had the mirena, I had no side effects for 3 years then all of a sudden it decided to give me every pregnancy symptom under the sun including leaky nipples! The only pain it caused was when I got it put in but it wasn't bad. I did continue to breast feed butI couldn't tell you if it caused my supply to decrease because I was already having issues. When I took it out I got pregnant within the month!

I got the Mirena IUD in March and I was super crampy the day of (the insertion itself is not terrible...just uncomfortable). I am thinking about getting it out bc I have been spotting since March!

But no supply issues with BF...LO is 11 months

I had the copper IUD (paraguard) for almost 10 years I'd before I got pregnant (hormonal bc and I do not mix!) I got pregnant one cycle after getting it removed.

We put it back in at my 6 week pp visit.
Insertion and removal before having a baby was pretty painful, but getting it in after the baby wasn't bad at all. No supply issues that I can attribute to the IUD.

I had the Mirena put in about 14 weeks after DD came. It hurt a TINY bit while they were putting it in, but nothing compared to childbirth! I didn't notice any side effects and it did not alter my milk supply at all. I did feel it once it was in place, perhaps it was in my head but I swear it was in there! I couldn't sleep on my side with it in.... but once again that might have been in my head. I got it taken out when DD was a year and within about three months I was pregnant again!

So, overall a good experience, except that I thought I could feel it.....

I am 5 months post partum and am exploring my birth control options. I don't know much about the IUDs (the Copper or the hormonal/Mirena). Anyone have any input?

-Which one did you have?
-Any side effects?
-Did it cause any pain while you had it (or while you were getting it in/taken out)?
-Did you breastfeed while having it? Any supply issues?
-How long did it take to get pregnant after you had it taken out?

Just answer with any applicable answers you may have or any thoughts/experiences etc. :)
