My doctor always said that most short LPs are caused by weak ovulation so treating it with progesterone, etc is only treating the symptom not the cause (weak ovulation creates a corpus luteum that doesn't produce much progesterone). So drugs like Clomid can help with LP defect because they cause stronger ovulation.

@Happygal: I don't take specifically a prenatal. I take a multi-vitamin, fish oil, folic acid and calcium/D (my ob/gyn's recommendations - said it was all the same as a prenatal). It's possible the multi-vitatmin doesn't have enough B6 in it. I don't remember the mg amount but it said 100% on the bottle.

Your prenatal vitamin most likely has all the B6 you need. I think the recommended amount is around 1.3 mg, and the highest you should go is 100 mg. For me, the average B6 vitamin and plus my prenatal would put me over that amount, which means I would pee out the excess, so that's literally money down the toilet.

My LP after coming off birth control for the first month was 7 days with spotting on day 6. I got pregnant the next month, with spotting starting on 10 DPO which never went away and I had a mc at 7 weeks. Third month LP was again 7 days, spotting on day 6 and then I started B6 in a B50 complex. Fourth month my LP increased to 11 days with spotting starting on day 9. I was super happy with this increase, despite the spotting. Month 5 I got pregnant again, spotting 10 DPO (implantation bleeding perhaps), and that lasted until week 7 on and off. This pregnancy stuck though and I'm 33 weeks now.
So no meds for me and maybe my short LP would have eventually lengthened out on its own, but I contribute my pregnancy to vit B6. I spotted for days and was still pregnant, don't give up hope! I don't feel though that if my LP kept staying around 7 days, I was giving a baby any hope of sticking. Good luck to you!

I had a 9-11 day lp, and got pregnant our first month trying (I was shocked). My midwife had my progesterone tested and it was fine. I tried to lengthen with b6, but didn't like the way it made me feel, so didn't have any interventions.

I spot for about 3-4 days before I get my period. Sometimes counting from day 1 of spotting, my entire "period" lasts up to 8 days. I was able to get pregnant naturally within 3 months of trying.

I used to start spotting 2-3 days before AF showed and the spotting would start as early as 10dpo. I always worried that we would have trouble conceiving because of it and I self-diagnosed myself with a luteal phase defect before we started TTC, but I guess I worried for nothing!

@LindsayInNY: oh, I had self-diagnosed myself with just about everything -- I've been there. Honestly, the month it happened for us - I was interviewing for a job across the country that was pretty exciting, me and DH went out there (San Fran) and envisioned living out there, I was ovulating around that time, got back and found out I was preggs - I definitely think me stressing less had something to do with it. But who knows! Maybe I had just perfected my timing by that point --- try the b6 though, can't hurt!

@hellobeeboston: See, comments like yours make me think I'm self-diagnosing via Google and really nothings "wrong." I don't know whether to try something new or just take the laid back approach to things...

I had a pretty short LP, I also used to spot a day or two before full AF.... I think mine was only 9/10 days. I started taking b6 but didn't notice a huge difference. It did take us about 7/8 months, but we got pregnant without any other interventions.

@lilteacherbee: Ooh, that's promising! Mine's been 11-12 days but 2 of those is usually spotting which I've read isn't a good sign. I'll have to get some B6 and try that... Thank you!!

My LP was 9 days when I got off BC pills. I took B6 and it lengthened it to 12 days within a few cycles.

I had a 7-9 day luteal phase with paragard. I have read that paragard shortens it. I also did acupuncture my first cycle off the paragard, and my luteal phase was 13 days- not sure which one caused it, or a little of both. While good, it was also super annoying because DH and I were both sure I was pregnant. I would look into acupuncture.

I'm still not sure if my lp was the issue or if it was male-factor. I didn't try progesterone cream because much of what I read said it didn't really work (wasn't strong enough)...but if it has worked for some, great! Clomid lengthened my lo to the normal 14 days but I still didn't get pregnant those cycles.

progesterone cream. It prevents the immature sheeding of your uterine lining. Many of us used it, although I can't remember exactly who.
Use it *after* you O, all the way until you get a BFP. If you are on like 18DPO and you still haven't gotten anything, stop the progesterone and let your period come back.
Wall me if you you're interested and want detailed info

Anyone able to get pregnant naturally (without assistance - medication, etc.) with a short LP? How short was your LP? Was it accompanied by spotting?

I've been spotting for 2ish days before AF and, although I thought my LP was an okay length, realized the spotting added with it might not be.
