@Foodnerd81: Great advice! Thanks! I totally know what you mean about expecting one thing, and then having it taste like something different. So I will go into it with a completely open mind.

Thank you for all of your advice and sharing your experiences with me :-)

@MrsBrewer: Just don't drink it and think it will be exactly like regular milk. It's kind of like eating a turkey burger and thinking it will taste like a real hamburger-- both are really good, but if you expect a hamburger you will be disappointed. The consistancy is slightly different than milk, and it tastes a little nuttier. you can get flavored or not (usually vanilla), sweetened or unsweetened. I find the sweetened vanilla a little too sweet for some things-- like if you put it in a cereal that is already sweet. I'm not particular on brand, but I do recommend you start with the refrigerated kind. In cereal I can't really taste teh difference but drinking a glass it is a little different. But delicious!

I don't do well with a lot of diary. My doctor just advised me to stay away from diary. I am still not very good about it. I can handle about a yogurt a day. Much after that it upsets my tummy. If you were a big milk drinker before I LOVE vanilla soy milk!

@Foodnerd81: You know I was just starting to google "cow milk alternatives" and almond milk came up like #1. I see it all the time too, maybe I will try that. Do you like the taste of it? How is the consistency, I'm really weird about that I don't know why.

@MrsBrewer: At least you figured it out! I actually get a stomach ache from soy milk too-- SO unfair, but I think it's because I'm also sensitive to gluten and soy is high in gluten? Either way, my personal favorite is almond milk, I prefer it to real milk now (probably because it doesn't hurt me, but whatever). And I slightly prefer the kind in the refrigerated section to the shelf stable, but it's nice to have the shelf stable one in the pantry all the time anyway. Also Silk Chocolate soy milk is delicious- so chocolatey.
Ah... adventures in lactose intolerance...

@Foodnerd81: So I wanted to see if milk affected me, so I ate a bowl of cereal this morning for breakfast, and I didn't even drink all the milk.....yep I'm not feeling to well this morning now. I didn't even realize that it was milk too! Maybe it's because I drink it pretty rarely.

Looks like I'm buying some soy milk, or other substitute for myself at the grocery store tonight!

@Foodnerd81: Same here! DH has been saying things to me lately about it. And I loooove cheese, seriously it's probably my favorite thing. So I keep on denying it. But I think this time I might have to admit that he's right.

@MrsBrewer: Yeah, that's exactly why the food diary will help! There were a lot of things that I just didn't put two and two together with-- actually it was DH who kept insisting I was L.I., and I was all, no, no, I drank milk every day growing up. I hate when he is right.
@sunny: I grew up here drinking the same old normal milk, and something just changed when I got older.

@sunny: I just drink regular grocery store milk, skim milk so fat free. But I'm really wondering if I just didn't associate it with milk before? I'm not a big milk drinker, so it's not that often I will just sit down with a glass of milk

@Foodnerd81: @sunny: Thanks! I will have to pick some up tonight at the store. What I'm going to try though is drinking a glass of milk tonight and see if that upsets my stomach. I just wonder if I didn't associate it with the milk before because a lot of my cooking is with "cream" soups, or cheese and stuff like that. Well tonight I have 0 dairy in our dinner, so only milk will be in it!

@Foodnerd81: Ya, that's odd that milk is ok and cheese is not...

Cheese is supposed to have less lactose than milk.

@MrsBrewer: Are you drinking any particular kind of milk, or just normal grocery store stuff?

I only ask because I've always wondered if my lactose intolerance had anything to do with growing up with milk in Canada and then moving to the US and drinking the milk here. I know it sounds a little crazy tho... :-) It was much more likely due to genetics and just a coincidence in timing.

Yup, it's near the Maalox, Pepcid, Tums, Pepto, type stuff. The generic is fine, I like to get the 'fast acting' or whatever it is called. Interesting that milk is ok but creamy stuff isn't. I hope you can sort it out kind of quickly-- it really sucks! And sometimes I totally eat things I know will upset my stomach and I just don't care because they are too darn good.

@MrsBrewer: Yup, you can get it at the grocery store/drug store/Costco. For me, Lactaid and the Kirkland brand work exactly the same. I haven't found a difference. You eat it with your first bite of the food.

That sounds exactly like me and I'm lactose intolerant though I've never actually gotten officially "diagnosed".

Like @Foodnerd81, I just experimented with foods and the Lactaid pills (I buy the generic Costco Kirkland brand). I first noticed it when I would always get sick after my morning cereal.

For some people, even cheese will make them sick, but I'm ok with eating cheese without any pills. I will eat a pill with a straight glass of milk, more than 2 small bites of ice cream or a creamy pasta sauce.

@Foodnerd81: Thanks sooooo much for your input!

See for me its weird its like ice cream, custard, and really creamy stuff affects me the most. The weird thing is, is that I can drink like an 8oz glass of milk and I'm fine....(I'm pretty sure at least...) some cheese seems to upset me but I guess I can't rule out which.

I think it's going to take trial and error as you said.

Yup, I have way too much experience with this! I am lactose intolerant- it probably developed in college, but I didn't realize it until a good 6 years later. Mine wasn't as bad as yours, it sounds like-- crazy uncomfortable bloating, but never running to the bathroom. I've found the best thing is trial and error, and keep a food diary and your symptoms. So, commit to one week of writing everything you eat, and how you feel. You very well may find some things with dairy are a lot worse than others. For me, milk is the devil. I drank it all growing up, but at some point, my body just rejected it. I can have a splash in my coffee and be fine, but that's it. creamy things, like ice cream, cream based soup, are pretty bad. Cheese-- it depends. Goat cheese is fine unless I totally pig out, full fat cheddar is usually ok (low fat cheese has more of the stuff that your body reacts to, so have the full fat), but I still need to limit the cheese. Yogurt is always fine, even the Pinkberry fro-yo kind. But I figured this out over years of trial and error. Also, it's worth getting some Lactaid pills-- I basically experimented with having ice cream with Lactaid and ice cream without- fun experiment while I was testing, less fun when I had it without and confirmed I'm intolerant!
Honestly, I have a lot fo stomach issues and doctors haven't really helped me that much. So much of it is seeing what hurts or doesn't. Maybe I just haven't gone to the best ones, I don't know, but it seems to all be in check, to a point, now. Hope that helps (since I seem to have written an novel).

ETA- are you pregnant now? if so, don't take the Lactaid without talking to a doctor. All the rest remains true!

So I don't know if I would call myself lactose intolerant because I've never dealt with this in the past.

So this has been happening now for the last couple months I would say, if I eating like custard, cream based soups, etc. I get violently ill. Without going into too many details, like I need to run for my dear life to the bathroom or there WILL be an accident.....Embarrassing....I hate it!

I'm not a "go to the doctor" sort of person, but this really sucks! I miss my dairy foods, and if I do eat them it's probably within 20-30 minutes any my stomach is in knots. I mean if I went to the doctor, is there even anything they can do besides tell me, don't eat dairy!

I know, the best option would obviously go to the Dr, but I'm just wondering if anyone else had this happen to them.

Anyone have experience with this?
