@HappyBaker: we did condoms or pull out. My fertile window happens to be when I am most interested so it would be a shame to skip it.

Thanks everyone! Question - when you WERE in your fertile time or whatever they call it, did you completely abstain or just use condoms?

@maddyz: That thermometer sounds really cool!

I used kendara to chart to avoid for a year before lo1. They just came out with a thermometer that links to your phone. I am super excited to use it after lo2.

Definitely read taking charge. I used paper charts for the first few months I was charting and it really helped me feel confident in what I was doing.

Also, get your dh involved. Give him accesses to where you are in your cycle so you can be a team instead of you being a gate keeper if that makes sense. It was so helpful for me for dh to know what the plan was before we were in the middle of doing the deed... it really takes two to make charting to avoid work as best as it can.

I use Creighton method/NaPro and had a great instructor. You can find one near you on the Fertility Care website: http://www.fertilitycare.org/

We loved NaPro. We took a class through our church, and we used it for almost 4 years to avoid.

I use the iCyclebeads app. It really helps me because I forget where I'm at in my cycle and it has notifications that pop up and remind you (you could turn them off of course if oyu wanted to).

Definitely agree to read Taking Charge. One tip if you are charting to avoid is to chart while using condoms for a few months to see if you have a regular cycle or not. If not, charting to avoid may be a bit risky, at least in the first half of your cycle. I've been charting for years and am pretty familiar with my cycle, however it is irregular and we got pregnant by accident anyway on a fluke cycle where I ovulated close to 10 days earlier than normal. I was using Ovia at the time and it had given us a "fertility score" of 1 (out of 10). Good thing it was a happy surprise.

You should read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" to refresh your memory. My thermometer is from Target and it works well. Make sure you get a BBT thermometer. I've used Fertility Friend and Ovia to chart and I like Ovia a bit better. I also used the charts in the back of TCOYF, but I stopped that once I had my first kid.

We learned NFP as part of our catholic marriage prep 6 years ago but didn't really pay attention because I was already on the pill. Fast forward 6 years and 2 kids later and I really want to stop taking the pill.

Do you have any good resources to get started? Favorite app for charting to avoid? Favorite thermometer?
