If everything has a dedicated "home" in the playroom then cleaning up is super quick and easy. LO knows where things go back in the playroom so if things migrate to the family room I just ask her to clean up and put things back and she can do it easily. Fortunately our playroom and family room are really close - on the same floor - so most of the time all the toys stay in the playroom.

We have a similar set up and at one point, more toys were coming out of the playroom than I liked.

Shes 4 (well, later this month) and I have to keep reminding her to put it back and clean up. Once, I told her I'll throw anything away that's not supposed to be in the living room and she does a good job of putting it back. BUT...she just throws it in her playroom

DD has all of her toys and books in her room, with the exception of her easel and art supplies. She can bring stuff into the living room to play with, but she has to put everything back in her room before we eat/ take a nap/ leave to go somewhere. I don't mind if she keeps her room a little messy, but I am pretty strict about keeping the common spaces clean. Toys that she refuses to toss back in her room have to go in "time-out" (aka up on a tall shelf) for a couple hours until she can put them back in the room where they go.

Our family room is her playroom. When we move I will only agree to a house with a dedicated play space. It's so hard to contain the toys and drives me crazy too:(.

They have a playroom so I have them move everything back in there at the end of each day, if something has migrated.

For us it helps that the playroom is visible from the living room so she doesn't feel the need to migrate toys into the living room. We keep a stack of books next to the couch and her slide is in there. At one point we did have toys in there but once I moved them all out including their storage plus rearranged the playroom it didn't really become an issue. We do occasionally bring a box of blocks in to build with as a family. I think it helped that I realized that one reason we kept playing in the lr was because it was nicer to sit on that floor, we have a rug and could pull pillows off the couch, adding a cozy rug and floor pillows to the playroom really helped. Maybe you could think about what draws them to play in the lr as opposed to where you want them?

We try to stay consistent with playroom toys vs living room toys and when we do clean up time before meals we put them where they belong. We still have to go through the living room toy basket every couple weeks though and pull out the playroom toys to take back upstairs. But it's pretty manageable for now. It might be easier since our playroom is on a different floor though. If i see her coming downstairs with playroom toys I can nip it in the bud pretty quickly.

I have let my son have toys in his room, some of the bigger stuff that i originally was insisting he keep in his playroom has migrated. It has helped to keep the stuff out of the living room.

Our living room is her playroom... But at the end of the day everything goes into the ottoman, so the only visible kid things are her toy kitchen and easel... Not too bad, for now.

My kids have a playroom off the living room, but they also have a play corner in the living room that has their kid table and art shelf. Now it has accumulated a basket of toys and a bunch of larger toys that live around it. I don't mind the art shelf, table and one basket but all of the other toys take over the living room and it drives me crazy. How do you control the toys in the main areas of your home?
