I took it and passed - yay! but still felt horrible afterwards.

I heavily salted my breakfast (eggs with avocado) so I think that helped my bp somewhat. I left right after the hour was up and drove home without a problem or feeling like I needed to call someone. But then I started having a major sugar crash. I tried eating chicken and rice in a cream sauce but I just kept crashing, had some water then some OJ, still not much better. Luckily I didn't have to be anywhere today and had my mom come up to watch LO since I knew how I responded last time. I ended up laying on the couch for 3 hours - mostly sleeping (I usually am not one to nap - the only times it works is a few times in the first trimester) and just feeling like I could not get up. Once I got up it still took the rest of the day to completely shake the feeling.

I guess I just get a crazy sugar crash reaction.

@Maysprout: All of that sugar + not eating for so long before the test made me feel super dizzy and nauseated. I ate a whole Chick Fil A chicken biscuit w/ egg. It made me feel SO much better.

@MrsCB: oddly my A1C was still normal even after my GD diagnosis... Though technically I didn't fail the three hour test because I only had one high number :-)

@Maysprout: definitely bring your DH with you if possible. I almost passed out after two three hour tests. I brought jelly beans with me to the second three hour test to raise my sugar levels. Then I went home and ate a better meal.

@Pirouette: a1c shows your average glucose level over the past two to three months.

@Pirouette: Nope, not fasting :). It's a cumulative measure of how your glucose has been over the past 3 months.

My nurse told me to bring food with me to the appointment. So as soon as I was done I had peanut butter on wheat toast, and a string cheese. I also had DH with me. I always feel better when he's around.
Or just decline the test. They can't force you.

@MrsCB: A1C is fasting glucose right? I'm really anxious about the GTT but didn't really think there were any alternatives. i get really dizzy and lightheaded if i have a lot of sugar at once.

Sorry i don't have any advice, but i'm really scared about this too!

TBH, I have GD and I would refuse the first test. I would ask that they test your A1c first, and if there's reason for concern, then take the test.

I ate afterwards but I don't remember what. I'll have to try to make sure it's protein rich, maybe take myself out for a burger even though I rarely eat meat. I really hated that feeling afterwards though.

@Maysprout: I started to feel really nauseous after my test, but then I ate something immediately after. I think that helped.

Have you considered talking with your doctor about alternatives?

My MW has postprandial meal options for GD testing! Maybe something like that would be an option instead?

For my last LO the practice I went to made everyone do two tests - one at 16 weeks and one at 28 weeks. I didn't puke but for both tests did feel really nauseous, was dizzy for hours afterwards to the point I think I'm going to have someone drive me home this time, and my bp dropped to 70/50 and I think it might have even gone lower when I got home since I just couldn't stand up without feeling dizzy.

Any suggestions for feeling better more quickly after the glucose test?
