The El from O'Hare is super easy. I would definitely do that if you don't want to bring seats.

I agree that the El is the easiest option. There are also car services that can provide car seats. I would not suggest a taxi/uber ride without a car seat, there is lots of traffic, many bad/distracted drivers, and the airports are a long way from downtown - can be an hour or more in rush hour traffic.

@butterbean: Does your toddler meet the height/weight requirements for the ride safer travel vest? Could be another option.

I think you should reconsider your opposition to the El (the metro). It is by far the easiest way to get from the airport into the city of Chicago.

Driving downtown in a city in a cab is one thing (we do it all the time without car seats because they don't go very fast, maybe 25 miles per hour tops) but the airport in Chicago is very far outside the city and your cab would have to go on a highway at faster speeds. I would do a car service and just request 2 car seats for those trips.

@Mrs Hedgehog: I totally agree with this. Cabs are very aggressive drivers too. I wouldn't put in a car I was driving without a car seat let alone one where someone else is driving.

Cabs aren't required to have carseats but I ask you this. If you aren't comfortable and it isn't safe putting your kids in YOUR car without a carseat, why would you put them in someone else's one without them? Honestly, IMO, just taking them and having some safe way to get the kids around, however majorly inconvenient, makes more sense for their sake.

The airports are pretty far from downtown Chicago. I wouldn't be comfortable taking them in a cab with no seat on the highway for an extended trip like that.

I wore my DD in a cab in Chicago...it was the best compromise we could make at the time.

I second others in taking the El though...its the best bet!

I would take the metro or bring my infant seat at the very least. I would not feel comfortable just holding onto my baby in a taxi. A huge risk not worth taking. How are you getting around once you're there? Walking?

I would schedule a livery service or an Uber that would provide car seats. I wouldn't be comfortable with my kids in a cab (or any car) without proper car seats even if it was technically allowed.

Why aren't you interested in the El? (what the metro is called.) It is by far the easiest way to get in from the airport, especially if there's traffic. I don't know about the laws for taxis, as I didn't have kids when I lived there.

We'll be traveling to Chicago in November with an infant and a toddler. We want to avoid bringing carseats with us so what would be the best way to get to our hotel from the airport?

I don't want to take the metro. If we jumped into a cab, are they required to have carseats?

Help! :)
