@muffinsmuffins yeah I'm an American with two kids with health issues and it's scary living in this system. My husband is actually looking for jobs in Canada because I'm terrified living here. And we have "good" insurance.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm shocked by the amount of variability in price. I definitely need to do my research!

My daughter got tubes last November. I looked up the bill, and it was just under $5k. It was $820 for the doctor, $686 for the anesthesiology, $3324 for the operating room, and $165 for supplies. Sounds like ours was a little high! Our Aetna insurance covered all but $540.

We paid around $4500 total between hospital, anesthesia, and doctor fees. Outpatient procedure at a hospital.

I clicked on this thinking it would be a thread experience, not price. I just have to comment that as a Canadian, the fact you need to compare fees for a necessary health procedure is absolutely beyond my comprehension. Our system here is not perfect by any means but we did tubes and adenoids last summer for my then almost 4yo and it was the best thing we ever did for him...and we didn’t pay a cent of course and had it done at a world renowned children’s hospital in our city. It makes me shudder thinking of a child who needs this or anything else done and can’t afford it or doesn’t have proper insurance. Good luck with your search and I hope the surgery goes well for your LO

DD2's (both ears) were around $2k at a children's outpatient facility with anesthesia. They did have us sign forms with the cost estimates before scheduling surgery, though. Seems so odd they wouldn't do that for you!

@SteelerGirl: Absolutely shop around! I think DD's were $3.4k total but we had to get them done at a hospital due to an underlying health issue and she got general anesthesia, not just sedation. I know if she would have been healthy enough and old enough to go to a satellite and have sedation, the cost would have been closer to $2.2k. So shop location and anesthesia type since your LO is older.

We also got adenoids out, but ours was $7k for hospital, $4k for ENT, and I'm waiting on anesthesiologist and lab bills.

We hit our deductible quickly.

The tubes also made such a huge difference. It's been 10 days and my kid can hear, talk, and walk so much better.

I can’t remember exactly but I want to say around $1500 for outpatient facility, $500-700 each for ENT and anesthesiologist. Also on a HDHP. I do think it varies a ton including based on where they do the procedure. I think the facility is the biggest difference since the actual procedure probably has a set price your insurance will pay (that is, make you pay!). But I’m not positive that’s the major factor just a guess.

I think this varies so much by area! 3yo should be an outpt procedure - I think it was about 1500 for us for just tubes. We had one kid have an adenoid removed and that was more

@SteelerGirl: Does your insurance plan have a cost estimator? That will give you an idea for what it should cost in your area.

FWIW, I ran it through mine (Kaiser in SF Bay Area) and it came out to around $6k total for the procedure.

Our 3 yo needs to get tubes in her ears. We have a high deductible plan and haven't met our deductible, so we're basically paying out of pocket.

Can anyone tell me roughly what this should cost? I feel like every ENT expects us to just sign her up for this procedure with no cost estimates up front. They could literally charge us anything they wanted! It sounds horrible to say we want to shop around for a good deal, but I don't want to be price gouged. Any tips on getting a fair price?
