I'm hoping my husband can endure a 15-minute outpatient procedure (vasectomy) for the 20 years of surgeries, hormonal birth control, HSGs, D&Cs, vaginal tearing, sciatica, mood swings caused by hormones, probable long term harm from injectable infertility drugs, intramuscular injections to prevent preterm birth, and overall profound physical and mental trauma I've endured from trying to conceive and childbearing.

But ... perhaps that's asking too much of him

@lioneyes: yes mine said the same thing when I insisted on just having them fully removed. She said the blood loss during a csection doesnt create the right environment for a full removal so I am going ahead with a tubal ligation as well. Goodluck!

Bumping this to say I just scheduled my tubal ligation today (it will happen during my C Section if all looks clean). My doc gave me zero pushback when I said I wanted it, but she did explain that during a C they won't remove your tubes, they will just cut/tie them. If you want them fully removed, you have to do it as a separate surgery.

I haven't had a tubal, but was offered it last year by my OB. I'm done having kids. Birth control was really negatively effecting my overall health. So, I got a Liletta IUD in per my OB's suggestion of medicine then surgery. I'm loving it so far. My periods are super brief and light. I don't have to remember to take a pill any longer. It's great.

I had a tubal ligation with my 2nd c-section. I’m pretty sure they cut them then cauterized them. I don’t know how they could possibly heal themselves back together after that. I might have had slightly more discomfort due to the procedure during recovery. But no pain during the surgery itself.

My periods did get a little crazy heavy for two cycles. But I have PCOS and they were some of the first post partum periods I had. So I don’t know if you can attribute it to the tubal or not.

For me it’s been totally worth it and I’d do it again. It’s nice having the peace of mind.

I had my tubes removed instead of tied because I had the same concern about still possibly getting pregnant. But I can say for certain that my periods have gotten so bad since that this Friday I'm going in for an Endometrial Ablation to finally have some relief.

@Mrsbells: @Sams Mom: you can def find horror stories online, just like with the mirena. My OB suggested it, said she found it to be a good, safe, option for me, and the less invasive/outpatient procedure was appealing to me. My 2nd was an emergency C so no time to discuss getting it tied at the same time.

@Mrsbells: I def don’t think it means no more periods because uterus is still there. It just means the egg has zero way to get fertilized or travel to the uterus.
I haven’t had my first PP period yet but it could be soon since I’m not BF. I’ll let you know what it’s like.

My sister had her tubes tied (not removed) almost a year ago and she has said her period is very unpredictable, heavy and long.

@Mrsbells: Essure is basically a coil that they insert into your tube to prevent fertilization. I looked into it at one point and it seems like its extremes only on people's opinion of it. I have never found a middle of the road review on it though.

@2PeasinaPod: @Mrsbells: I just had my tubes removed with my 2nd CS almost 5 weeks ago. My OB said that “tubes tied” is actually pretty outdated and she encourages full removal now. I didn’t ask many questions about why, I just knew I wanted the greatest chance of preventing accidental pregnancy and I trust her.

My husband is getting a vasectomy after we have our second child this summer. I've had to worry about birth control our entire relationship, being pregnant and giving birth twice so I figure it's his turn to do something about family planning. Way easier for a male to get it done and no risk to you about having heavier periods or other potential problems.

This info is all so helpful! The plan is to get my tubes tied (or clipped or removed, per this thread!) when I have my RCS with this pregnancy. It’s interesting to hear it’s painful during the C surgery- does anyone know if there’s as much pain if you do it later with laparoscopy? I def want it done (DH also agreed to a vasectomy, we are donnnne after 2) but don’t know the scar tissue condition from CS #1 so would be open to going back later to do it, especially if it hurts less.

I am going to have my tubes tied during my final c-section. We are ttc #2 right now and am now on clomid trying to help it a long. I say final because if I end up pregnant with twins, I told my OB its going to be a fire mission, take anything you have to to make sure I don't get pregnant with baby #4. If it's a singleton, I might wait and see how we feel about a 3rd. I would have Nexplanon put in until we decided and they can do tubals via laproscopic surgery now so it won't be major surgery if I go back and decide I want one.

I got a rival with my last c-section and DH got a vasectomy when LO3 was 2 months old. I figured double surgical sterilization should leave us pretty set birth control wise 😉

Some people (and I was one of them) get a lot of pain from the actual tubal clipping. The rest of the c-section was great, no pain but the moment he clamped my tubes I had severe pain referring into my chest. Had I not been warned about the referred pain I might have thought I was having a heart attack. I could also feel shooting nerve pain from my tubes area for the first few weeks recovering from my section.

I had it done during my 3rd csection. It took about 5 extra minutes. I noticed I was a bit more sore for longer but I can’t say for sure that was the cause. It was my 3rd section in less than 4 years.

I ended up going back on the pill because without it I had more cramping, back acne, etc. I was also like this before kids.

@Mrs D: If this helps at all, my husband had the “no scalpel” method of vasectomy, and he literally was sent home with two Advil and an ice pack, and he didn’t even take the Advil. By contrast, my friend’s husband had the older method and was a huge baby for a week. So the thing he’s maybe scared of might be avoidable while still having a vasectomy.

I had my tubal ligation at my second C-section. I was also asked a ridiculous number of times. I was 40 when this occurred. I noticed the heavier and sometimes less predictable periods. My OB felt like this was anecdotal. I had been on birth control for a ridiculous number of years. Had a baby, tried mirena, hated it, went on birth control for a few more months before we were ready to have #2. Went through another pregnancy and now was having post partum periods. My eggs are older than ever and therefore result naturally in heavier bleeds and less predictability. It's part of my age. And it had been so long since I had non regulated periods for length of time that I didn't have a good grounded judgement on the topic. Makes sense, but still sort of sucks.

Additionally, in my case, my tubes were cut, tied and burned. A section of 1-2 inches was actually removed. Having a pregnancy would be virtually miraculous at this point. I'm not sure all OB's perform the same procedure whereas I think a vasectomy is more standard in procedure.

My Dr's response was "I've delivered a lot more surprise tubal babies than surprise vasectomy babies"...I was a bit surprised, so I said "oh, vasectomy's have a higher success rate at no accidents?" - and she said "well there are varying opinions but in my professional opinion vasectomy's are a better guarantee against unwanted future pregnancies..."..."also, my husband has a vasectomy...for what its worth"...haha...I laughed...point taken.

@Mrsbells: I had a tubal after my second C-section. Aside from being asked 982734987 times if I'm absolutely "SURE" I want to do this (which was just infuriating to me), the only real lasting side effect is heavier periods. And it's heavy for 1-2 days, then gone. They're over much faster than they were previously.

I also had horrible cramps prior to getting my tubal. Part of me having LO2 was a uterine surgery that cleared out scar tissue from Asherman's syndrome from my miscarriages, so I think that was also causing some of my really painful periods. Since then, I feel like my cramping is a breeze that can easily be handled by ibuprofen. No regrets so far!

One thing I've heard women talk to their physicians about is removing your tubes altogether. Leaving your ovaries and uterus, but taking the tubes out. Less chance of the tubal not working and you becoming pregnant again.
