It took me awhile to get my twins on a schedule. It took about six months I think. The biggest things I did was sleep train, feed at the same time and wake them up together.

Thank you all!

@junebuglim: This is so helpful. They ARE totally different little people, which is why I was at such a loss. I have hope that it will be easier once they are older and eating solids and awake longer.

Our new strategy is a consistent bedtime routine, starting at 6 no matter what, and aiming for bed at 7/7:30. We fed them at the same times overnight last night and it worked well, so hopefully that will get them synced too. We've got them sleeping together at night again and apart for naps so they don't disturb one another.

Like you I didn't put my twins on the same schedule from the beginning.. They just were so different in every way that I couldn't "force it". Around 3 months I think I was able to get them to nap at similar times maybe once a day - only because I'd get lucky and they were able to fall asleep drowsy but awake while swaddled, but once I had to get rid of the swaddle I started putting them to nap in different rooms in order to guard their sleep. The only that thing was same was their bed time ~7-7:30 for a long time but throughout the day it was a toss up because I just based their naps according to when they woke up from each and we were all over the place!

It wasn't until very recently (they're a little over 8 months, 7 months adjusted) that I put them on a more regular/predictable schedule. First nap around 8:30/9 and second nap around 12:30/1 optional third nap depending on how they are toward the end of the day and length of last nap... I did this in hopes that their wake up times would regulate and be more predictable and it seems to be helping! I don't wake the other one up when one wakes (sometimes they wake each other up of course!) but I don't let the one that stays asleep go longer than 2 hours max (but this is super rare anyhow).

Our son is able to fall asleep on his own for his naps - we had to nap train for this. Our daughter we didn't do this with because short naps affect him way more than her so we still walk/rock her to sleep for her naps. She also sleeps in the pack n play in our room for her naps whereas he sleeps in his crib in their room. I guess I didn't feel comfortable nap training her since we were accommodating his sleep?

Because their wake up times are now more in sync their meal times are also within 15/30 minutes of each other. I feed them their solids at the same time too.. they seem more focused on eating while the other is there!

Hope this helps. Still trying to figure out things here :)

Would it be possible to sleep train them in separate bedrooms?

I'm definitely not an expert in the area of twins but there's a mom of twins on the babycenter sleep forum who really knows her sleep stuff. She trained her babies at 5.5 months in separate rooms and they're on the exact same schedule even though each baby has different sleep needs. It may be worth checking out the teaching your baby and toddler to sleep forum!

Eta: she moved the babies back into the same room after a couple of months.

I don't have much wisdom here, but I did recently talk to a mom of twins about the feeding question. If one baby eats, the other eats too. Especially at night. She says it helps them stay on a similar path throughout the day. They may not end up napping well or together, but it does help their attempts to get them to do so.

My twins are now 4.5 months. We have been feeding on demand and use the 90 min sleep program for naps. I know so many people recommend using a hard and fast schedule for twins from the very beginning, but we witnessed failure to thrive in another infant in our family in part because of newborn scheduling, so it just wasn't an option for us.

But now that they are older/bigger/stronger, I think we all would benefit from being on a more consistent schedule for the day and night. We are willing to nap/night sleep train as part of this, since I don't know how I would get them to nap at the same time without them being able to fall asleep independently.

The 90 min sleep thing has been great for getting them to nap, but I feel like it kind of makes us really inconsistent for bedtime and morning wake times. So I'm not sure where to begin starting a schedule. If one wakes up in the morning or at naps, should I be waking the other up? Should I be trying to feed them both within say a 1/2 hr window each time?

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!
