@petitenoisette: Not in my experience. Especially since you often have more than one daycare teacher to gift for a young child, and fewer public school teachers per child. Regardless, everyone should give what they are comfortable with. I just know that outside of this forum, I hear a lot more of the $5-$10 range. After all, it's the thought that matters and not the amount, right?

@Shannon: I think there's a big difference between the norm for daycare teachers and public school teachers, so that might be part of the discrepancy.

I'm gifting $50 each to my daughters daycare teachers. They deserve it and they don't make anywhere near what a public school teacher would make.

As a high school teacher, I'm thrilled with anything, even just a card. Most parents and kids don't do anything anymore at that age.

@Shannon: interesting! That makes me feel better about only planning on doing $5-$10 giftcards... We just can't spend $100+ on teacher gifts 😬

I used to do $50/teacher but have cut down now that my 3 kids are all in child care/preschool and there are many many teachers/staff. For the main teachers, I do $30-40, for the floater teachers, I do $15-20.

We tend to not contribute to the communal donation fund with cash (because I can never really tell if it was in fact given to the teachers as promised), but instead donate raffle item for the holiday party. We've also grouped with specific classroom parents to cater a lunch for teachers and staff.

This year I remembered to buy the Target giftcards when they were 10% off so that's what the teachers will be getting!

@nana87: It's interesting how different schools do it! Ours doesn't allow communal gifts because they don't want families to feel obligated to contribute. But that is what I would prefer so I didn't have to worry myself over it!

Thanks for everyone's feedback! Seems like $20-25 is about average and that's how I was leaning.

Now I need to decide on where the card should be for! In the city so we don't have target/Walmart type places. I was thinking Amazon for practicality or Sephora for fun!

At our center, individual families are only allowed to give cards or homemade gifts to avoid favoritism or making families who can't afford gifts feel badly. Parents (anonymously) pool money together to a class (or this year, center-wide) fund for teacher gift cards, and sometimes for a special thank you catered meal or treat. We usually put in $10-20 for the communal gift.

For those of you that are teachers, if you got a GC to say Target, would you spend it on yourself or for class stuff? I was hoping the teachers would use their cards for themselves....

We are doing a $15 Chipotle card + some cold brew coffee + a bottle of wine for each teacher. 5 teachers. LO goes 4 days per week, full time.

We did something similar last week, and the teachers seemed surprised and grateful.

@Mrs D: hats off to you for spending only $50 on 50 people. I thought that would have for sure been pushing $200. LO still goes to the infant room every morning until the crawlers arrive. I almost pulled the trigger on getting them something too, but DH reminded me I gave them thank you gifts already. Heck, I love all the "goodmornings" the front desk staff gives me on my way to work. Everyone should get a gift!

@Shannon: When I was a teacher (MS/HS) I got very few gifts. The most generous gift I got was a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. I don't know if that's because of the number of teachers high schoolers have, or the SES of my students' families, or what, but I agree with you that smaller dollar amounts are probably more common/a lot of families don't give monetary gifts (outside of preschool).

Oh my goodness! This same question was asked on a local moms thread on my facebook with hundreds of responses, and the most common answer was $10 per teacher with many teachers weighing in to say that would be VERY generous. I don't know if people who only do $5/$10 cards would be as likely to post above given the huge amounts many have already posted.

@JMOM: I would like one to Target/walmart vs teacher supply store for me! I find the specialty teacher stories are often prohibitively expensive and I can get more of what I need and want at other stores so I tend to go there first anyway.

A question for the elementary/middle schoolteachers. Would you appreciate a gift card to Target/Walmart OR a teacher supply store more? I have gotten my DD's teachers a gift card to a local teacher supply store the last couple of years, but I wonder if that is the right thing to do.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Not sure how many are on the staff - I buy for 50 people and its been enough (I do the same ting during teacher appreciation week). It cost me $50 last fall.

Given you have one LO, who is still young you may not have encounter so many of the staff that you need to do this/want to do this yet. For me, I have K who is 3.5 and in Pre-school...I also have E who is 9 mos (still in the infant room). This is the only daycare center we have used - so since K was 3.5mos. K has been through almost every class room there, the teachers still play a role in her life. A friendly face when she comes in the door, helping her new teachers get to know her, little things throughout her day. So it gives me a way to acknowledge their continued investment in my child - without having to buy gifts for 20+ teachers!

I also have E who is still to go through those classrooms...but I know they will invest in her the same they have invested in K. Plus - many of the teachers spend their breaks in the newborn room - so they do spend time with E now.

the parent's association at our school organizes very generous birthday, holiday, and end-of-year gifts for all the teachers (basically, a mall gift certificate -- it is valid at ANY store in the mall...Nordstrom, Apple, Gap...)
Because of this, there isn't much expectation that parents give their own gifts (because our Parent Association dues cover this 'official' gift). So, we are just going to give a small batch of holiday cookies from my favorite bakery and DS is decorating cards that I will write notes on.

I know there are floaters, but I don't know who/how many, so I just gift the two main teachers $25 each plus something small like a cosmetic bag, candle, etc. I got the director a box of chocolate last time, I'll probably get her something again...

3 teachers per child. In the past I have done $25 gift cards to their primary teachers.

This year, I am doing $25-35 gifts per teacher (4 total). The regular floaters are getting $10 giftcards (4 total).

2 teachers are getting nicer gifts, one is our primary sitter (and a close friend of mine) and the other occasionally sits and has now had both my girls through her newborn room - I have a soft spot for these girls as time goes on.

I also do bagels & cream cheese for the center.

If I am going to go overboard at the holidays and spoil anyone it will damn sure be those who watch my children each day. They are awesome and do something I could not...

My sons have two teachers and a third who is always with them toward the end of the day. I got the two main teachers a $30 gift card each and I put them in a mason jar with some holiday candy and wrapped some ribbon around it. For the third teacher, I did a $15 gift card in the mason jar. But, my sons have the same teachers, so sometimes I feel like I should do even more ...
