@erinbaderin: I think we're going to have the same issue with weight. My older two are 45 and 47 lbs, respectively, wearing all their winter gear. :silly: It wouldn't even have occurred to me except that a friend mentioned she was getting her daughters (who are six and eight, but substantially larger than my six and eight year old) hoverboards for Christmas....I checked the specs out of curiousity and most of them start at a minimum of 44 lbs for the boards to "recognize" a rider. I figure there is a margin of error (kind of like if a car's seatbelt locking mechanism says it kicks in at 35-40 lbs, I want my kid in a carseat harness rather than the seatbelt a bit beyond that to ensure we're good)...and that we need to wait a while. A bit of a bummer, but - bonus - they can still ride in the neighbor's PowerWheels b/c they are light! :)

@PinkElephant: I have a nearly 7 year old who can’t do the “real” pogo stick, and it’s because he isn’t heavy enough, so keep an eye out for that. My son just doesn’t have enough body weight to compress the springs.

@PinkElephant: This is the one we have:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076HRQD2X/

He was 5.5 at the time (holiday gift / early March birthday). It took some practice but within a few weeks/months of practice he was counting jumps in the 100s. He's pretty big for his age but I think an 8yo would be fine.

@bhbee: The 4 year old who the Flybar was intended for only gets in a few jumps before she loses her footing, but she has a blast trying. She's gross motor delayed, though, so she's not the BEST metric of age/ability. My six and eight year olds can go forever on it, and at 45 and 47 lbs, respectively, they've got enough "heft" to them to really get going, whereas my 34ish pound 4 year old doesn't get much off the ground.

@ElbieKay: The Flybar is a padded block kind of like a yoga block with a stretchy tether handle, so it's easier to "balance" and not much fall risk as compared to a true pogo "stick". I'm frankly not sure of the physics of why and how it works as well as at does - it doesn't look like it should bounce! :)

Can your 5.5 year old do the "real" Pogo stick? Which one? My oldest (8, not super coordinated, but VERY strong in her core and upper body - like ninja material, haha) thinks she wants one, but I'm not sure how much success she'll have.

@ElbieKay: good to know! We do have the little trampoline here, so maybe my youngest (similar age to your twins) can do that if the big kids ever get the pogo sticks. My nephew is 3 and a few months - it was on his list for Christmas but maybe he’ll have to grow into it (I’m sure he’ll want it anyway since his turning 6 sister is getting one too!).

@PinkElephant: Good point! I got a pogo stick for my son last year when he was 5.5. He LOVED it, and it is always a hit when other kids come to visit.

@bhbee: I think 3 is too young. I would start more around age 5. I have twins that will be 2.5 in January and no way would they be able to handle the pogo stick on their own. Sometimes my husband will hold them on it and bounce them by lifting both toddler and pogo together but that (a) is exhausting and (b) frankly doesn't look very safe. I would get a small indoor trampoline if you have a 2.5-3yo who likes to bounce.

I’m glad you liked this because I have two wrapped for my niece and nephew! What’s your guess on the youngest age? Could a 2.5-3 year old do it?

My four year old was gifted a My First Flybar pogo toy for her bday, and my six and even eight year olds are all about it. I’m not sure if it appears too babyish for your nephew, but we’ve all had a blast with it (including me - they weight limit is something like 200 lbs). I like that it gets energy out but can be used indoors with very little learning curve, and doesn’t have high injury potential.

@Mrs. Champagne: I had my DD browse the Lakeshore catalog, but she missed picking this one for her cousin. Love it!

@JennyPenny: That is such a good idea!

@bhbee: @BadgerMom: @peaches1038: I have to find out if they are building a Lego collection. We are pushing Legos with my DD, but they're a toy where I feel like unless you have a fair amount, a small set doesn't get used.

@BadgerMom: @ElbieKay: @erinbaderin: Thanks for the feedback about Kiwi Crates. Nephew is definitely a doesn't-sit-still kid, so it may not be the best fit.

@ElbieKay: I hadn't seen Crazy Forts before - they look cool, and like something nephew would enjoy and be able to play with pretty independently.

@erinbaderin: I know my DH would LOVE to gift him hover soccer!

@peaches1038: I have heard good things about Ticket to Ride - glad to hear that it works for this age group, and always happy to find a gift that he can enjoy with his sister!

Thank you everyone for the ideas! Jotting some of these down for DD as well!

Legos or games are the biggest hits for my 5 yo right now. He likes Ticket to Ride, first journey, checkers, battleship. I’m getting him zombie kids, space escape, rat a tat cat and go nuts for donuts for Christmas

We have Kiwi crates for my 4 and 6 year old. The 4 year old loves it, the 6 year old is much more active and is only half interested in it - generally it requires too much sitting still. Also seconding @ElbieKay: - the things they make are cool but they generally never get used after the day they're made.

If he likes tinkering and using tools what about the Britax Builder kits? re: active toys, mini-hockey sticks, a hover soccer ball for indoor play if they're in a place where they'll be stuck inside in the winter, or maybe some beginner stilts?

I tried Kiwi crates after my son kept begging for one. He was 5.5 at the time. We did not extend our subscription. He definitely needed help executing on the project, and then he never played with any of the things he made (other than the day of). So I feel they actually add to the clutter less productively than a toy that will actually get re-used. (Since he made it, he still wanted to keep it.) In summary: I'm not a fan.

My suggestions for a 6yo: My son LOVES the tabletop pinball machine my parents got him last year. Uno, ConnectFour or Battleship are good games to introduce him to. (My son was also interested in Chess at this age but he still requires a LOT of hand-holding.) We don't have Crazy Forts but they look like a great toy. My son also LOVES his Nerf guns, Bey Blades and Pokemon cards but as a parent, well, ugh. Book suggestion: The "Who Would Win?" series compares the traits of different animals and discusses who would win if they had a battle. I am getting my 6.5yo some "Who Is / Who Was" books as well as some "Dogman" books this year at my friend's suggestion.

@Mrs. Champagne: @JennyPenny: Ha! My 6 year old pointed out that kit in the Lakeshore Catalog too!!!

Another vote for legos. My six year old loves them and can do them by himself. I wouldn’t worry to much about the age suggestion. Anything in the $30ish and under range is totally doable for him even if it say 8+.

We get the kiwi crate monthly and DS LOVES it by he does need our help to complete it. Which we don’t mind because it gives us something to do together. I do have to say he doesn’t get a ton of play out of most of them though. It’s definitely all about the process for us.

I think a crate is a good idea! I would think at 6 he could do it mostly himself, except for the reading. We have tinker and not kiwi since my oldest is 8 (tinker would be challenging for my almost 6 year old) but they’re pretty manageable while being creative.

My almost 6 year old boy is obsessed with Legos and transformers. If Legos might be a fit, Target and probably other stores also are having great early Black Friday deals. His favorite series are Ninjago and Star Wars (despite never seeing any shows or movies!). Lego Technic could also be interesting because of the vehicles involved and how there are moving parts - might be a fit with the tinkering. But we’re Lego obsessed and I know it’s not everyone’s favorite!

Our nephew's birthday is coming up in a few weeks. With him and his sister home more due to the pandemic, I am very conscious of not getting him a clutter-producing gift. I have thought about a Kiwi Crate, since he likes tinkering, but other moms, tell me: is the gift of a project for you and your child to do together just too much right now? Any other great suggestions for an almost six-year-old who is super active, loves hockey, using tools, and riding his 4-wheeler?

I will send books for Christmas, so am planning on something else for the birthday gift.
