@erinbaderin: pretty basic? We bought a basic toolbox when we got our condo 10 years ago to take care of basic stuff (hammer, pliers, etc.), but we never needed power tools beyond the drill that does get a lot of use as I've had him hang curtains and pictures in the last few months.

They do make cordless drills that come with extra batteries. That way you can keep an extra charging. I bought a small screw gun for myself for hanging things in our house and working on pianos. I've never had problems with the battery.

@BUNBUN: If you’re not using it a lot I’ve found a corded drill is better - we have two cordless drills and we always have to use the corded because they’re both always dead.

We got a great collapsible workbench at either Lowe's or Home Depot that we still use to this day. Natural wood, a shelf underneath and the legs fold when the shelf is removed. It's extremely sturdy

A cordless drill is always useful. If his dream is to "make things" then I would also consider an electric sander.

What is his tool situation like? I would suggest some slightly less basic power tools - a drill, maybe a circular saw.

My husband's dream of owning a house finally came true this summer and since we moved in, he's been talking about creating a workshop in our garage, building things, etc. For as long as I've known him (20ish years), the man barely knows how to lift a hammer, so I'm assuming this is just a nesting thing for him that will pass like most of his hobbies have, but I'd like to get him something for the holidays to support this new dream and have no idea where to start. He already has a basic toolbox, so I' m looking for something beyond that and ideally something that isn't absurdly expensive ($150-200 max). Would love any recommendations, thank you!
