I bought gifts- for the child and his close in age sibling. His friend suggested DH and him split the lunch bill after it came! DH and I recently became godparents (his side of the family) and we didn't receive gifts (we did buy our godchild a gift). We also went out to eat afterwards and paid for ourselves. I came from out of town for my godson/nephew's baptism but I stayed with my sister at her apartment (I was babysitting him for a few days anyway). Usually the baby receives a baptism gift, not adults. I also don't think you should have to or offer to pay for hotel accommodations.
