Someone brought me blueberry muffins from Whole Foods after my first was born six years ago. I still remember and dream about those muffins. It was soooo good bc I was starving all the time!

Definitely food! With my first, I had a friend who brought a bag of yummy Trader Joe's snacks, and it was amazing since the hospital food was terrible and I was ravenous.

Food. Food. Food. No balloons or flowers. All I wanted was food and an excuse not to cook! Practicality takes over when you have a newborn.

Bring easy to eat food like fresh fruit, cookies, muffins, plus a bunch of different beverages IN A COOLER. Plus clean dry snacks, like pretzels, Cheez-Its, or even dry sandwiches (i.e. just meat and cheese, or chicken salad with split croissants in a separate container). Having a cooler of chilled food and beverage was my favorite thing after both my C-Sections because I could just lean over and grab something from my bed. Also if you bring chilled prune juice, you da real MVP.

Handy non-food items: a sleepmask, Chapstick, hair ties, lanolin, a nipple shield, a MAM pacifier, warm fuzzy socks, and I LOVED having a zip-up duster robe to keep my shoulders covered while I nursed.

This is coming from a caffeine addict who gave it all up for pregnancy. I told my sister she couldn't come see her first nephew unless she had a large coffee for the discarded shell after my c-section (that would be me, because we joked that my in laws treated me like nothing but a vessel for their grandchild). But snacks are also a great idea because although the hospital food wasn't bad, I was craving snacks between every meal. Don't bring anything too big (balloons large flower arrangements) because you have to take so much stuff home with you when you leave that anything that can't be poked into a bag is kind of a pain. If you want to send flowers send them to her house instead.

Food!!! My hospital food wasn’t bad, heck it was a treat not to have to cook, but I would have loved fresh fruit.

@snowjewelz: That is such a great gift idea. I remember always having enormous water bottles on hand and a nice water bottle with a small basket of various snacks would be a great mom gift.

If she has an extended stay, some fresh fruit, homemade chicken soup or anything that beats hospital food would be welcome too.

Balloons/flowers depend on the person - some love it, others don't like the idea of having to lug all of that home, or feel guilty that they'll just leave it at the hospital.

My friend was due Tuesday - her c/s date is next Tuesday

When the time comes and I go see her and the new baby at the hospital what should I bring? Food? Balloons? Flowers?
